Novels by James Harriot. the first is All Creatures Great and Small, then All Things Bright and Beautiful. There are several and they are beautiful books. He was a veterinarian and wrote beautifully about animals. older books..1950's or 1960's, I think.
Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefwater (also has a bird on the cover so you could double up woth the April buzzcover which is also animals)
Thanks for the recs! Beartown is a great pick! I read it a while ago. And I'm scared of The silence of the Lambs. I'm not a horror girl AT ALL. I also thought of Agatha Christie's Five Little Pigs. Now's a great time for someone who's been wanting to read that to have a go at it.
Just here to recommend The Knight and the Butcherbird by Alex E Harrow for anyone looking for a quick read for this prompt. It’s a short story and available on KU.

Bull Moon Rising
Deadly Animals"
Thanks so much for the Dear Mrs. Bird recommendation! I just finished reading it and what a lovely brave hilarious book it was. 5 stars!
I really enjoyed this one - a great school library find, The Hippo at the End of the Hall by Helen Cooper.
