We kick off our January read, wrap up Akata Witch, and welcome in new public domain characters. There's a new Lord of the Rings movie this year. Yay! Plus, Veronica had a rhubarb cider, and Joe Abercrombie looks great for 50!

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 1677 comments I am a bit surprised no one mentioned the Father-Daughter dynamic. I thought it was totally unnecessary,
Yes, Abercrombie is Fifty but as the saying goes: Fifty is the new Forty," So really you can blow that milestone off, Sixty, however, you can't do anything with, That one leaves a mark.
Being in Thailand now, I get to celebrate 3 New Years. I am already done with 2025. I get the Chinese New Year , Year of the Snake on Jan 29th, then in April I get the Thai New Year, which is a week long water fight with super soakers in the streets, Thai people love to celebrate everything,

Scott | 224 comments Do you mean Sunny's relationship with her father and the scenes that showed some of it? In the context of Akata Witch, it's important to help develop the character of Sunny. It becomes even more important an element in later novels. The family relationships of all the characters matter. And really, it wouldn't be realistic to act as if those relationships weren't important in the life of a child.

I'm a bit confused what you thought was unnecessary?

Trike | 11349 comments Interesting that Veronica mentioned wanting to use twinkly lights as decoration because last week I mentioned something similar to Mrs. Trike. We have faux wooden rafters across our ceiling and I said that we could wrap remote-controlled battery-powered LEDs around them for movie watching ambiance.

…and immediately ran into the issue of how to get 12 feet up to install them and then change batteries. :p

But it did send me down the rabbit hole of looking at decorating with fairy lights that isn’t Christmas (or college dorm).
