message 3: by GailW (last edited Jan 25, 2025 05:25PM) (new)

GailW (abbygg) | 771 comments I've been having an outstanding reading month! It is going to be hard to pick because I have 5! But I'll only list 3:

- Title: The God of the Woods
- Author: Liz Moore
- Rating: 5
- Format: Print
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): #13-A book involving a "group" with at least 4 members that's not a family
- Brief reason why it was the best: A literary mystery, smartly written, engaging characters (even if you didn't like them).

- Title: The Last White Man
- Author: Mohsin Hamid
- Rating: 5
- Format: Print
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): #33-A book by an author you enjoyed but haven't gotten around to reading again for some time
- Brief reason why it was the best: a brilliant premise - people in town are waking up in the morning and have turned from white to black. The book delves into the mob reaction to the changes, showing how easy it is to fall for the "moral panic". It then delves into the reaction of certain people. And then its over and there is no longer any reason to demonstrate or riot.

- Title: The World That We Knew
- Author: Alice Hoffman
- Rating: 5
- Format: Print
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): Aty Reject challenge: A book that was a finalist, runner-up, or winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize
- Brief reason why it was the best: It has been a long time since I became so emotionally invested in a book that I was still crying long after it ended. Set during 1941-1945 in first Berlin and then France, it is the story of a mother's love for her child. The extremes that she will go to ensure that her child is safe, no matter the cost. It is the story of another young woman who believes that she can do anything, even if a woman is not allowed to. It is the story of a golem, who develops a heart.

Title: My Friends
Author: Fredrik Backman
Rating: 5 Stars
Format: Ebook - NetGalley Early Release (Publishes May 20)
ATY Prompt you used it for: A book that involves art, music, dancing or acting
Brief reason why it was the best:
Backman has a great way of making simple moments poignant. This book features a set of friends, one of which is an artist, and is set in the present day with flashbacks to the friend group's childhood. It had beautiful insights on life, humanity, friendship, societal struggles, and art. I loved it so much.

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 714 comments - Title Where the Crawdads Sing
- Author Delia Owens
- Rating 5
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio) eBook
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable) 9 (2019)
- Brief reason why it was the best I enjoyed the author's style of writing, the information about the marsh and its wildlife, and the snippets of poetry sprinkled throughout the book. I enjoyed the plot, which was kept tight, no lagging. And the ending was most satisfactory!

message 7: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease | 1249 comments Title: Kill for Me, Kill for You
- Author: Steve Cavanaugh
- Rating: 5 stars
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio) Print
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): A book connected to something mentioned in the Do Re Mi song
- Brief reason why it was the best: I thought it was just going to be a modern take on Strangers on a Train, but then it got twisty and more interesting. It was tight writing and plotting and kept me guessing.

message 8: by John (new)

John Warner (jwarner6comcastnet) | 204 comments - Title: Great Circle
- Author: Maggie Shipstead
- Rating: ★★★★★ and ❤
- Format: Audio/print
- ATY Prompt you used it for: 1. A book with a cover that has an image of something that starts with A, T, or Y. The cover of this book includes an airplane (A)
- Brief reason why it was the best: Shipstead excels in portraying the inner lives of her characters, showing how the choices we make shape our futures in ways we can't always control.

message 9: by Denise (last edited Jan 26, 2025 08:30PM) (new)

Denise | 572 comments Title: Still Alice
Author: Lisa Genova
Rating: 5
Format: print book
ATY prompt: haunting
Why: the writing, the way she would switch the perspective to Alice and let us really see how it might be inside the mind of a person worth Alzheimer's. She met her goal of letting us explore that idea
Title: Out of My Mind
Author: Sharon Draper
rating: 5
Format: print book
ATY prompt: country song
Why: Actually kind of similar to Alice (which I realized right now as I typed it) in that we get inside the mind of a girl wth cerebral palsy who is gifted but cannot speak and until she gets a life changing computer that speaks for her, and she cannot let anyone know how smart she is and how much she needs say

message 11: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1619 comments I have had seven five star reads this month! It's very good since January in the US has been pretty scary - thank goodness for good books!

- Title: The Housekeeper and the Professor
- Author: Yōko Ogawa
- Rating: 5 stars
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio): Audio
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 24. A book with a main character who is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, or a criminal
- Brief reason why it was the best: It is a beautiful story about an unlikely friendship. The professor has lived for years with a traumatic brain injury that only gives him 80 minutes of short term memory. His housekeeper and her son learn how to have a friendship with someone who will not remember them from day to day.

- Title: Midnight Crossroad
- Author: Charlaine Harris
- Rating: 5 stars
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio): Audio
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 13. A book involving a "group" with at least 4 members that's not a family
- Brief reason why it was the best: This trilogy has vampires, psychics, angels, witches, were-animals all wrapped up in an intriguing mystery. Harris ties in some of her others series with this one. I loved the whole trilogy. I am sad that there aren't more of these books.

- Title: The Bonesetter's Daughter
- Author: Amy Tan
- Rating: 5 stars
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio): Audio
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 26. A book by an author with a common noun in their name
- Brief reason why it was the best: This story follows a woman and her mother. One time line is told from the daughter's point of view as her mother is elderly and suffering from Alzheimer's. The other time line is told from the mother's perspective as a young woman in China before, during, and after WWII. It is sad in parts, but it is a beautiful story.

Honorable mentions:
Night Shift and Day Shift are the other two books of the Charlaine Harris - Midnight, Texas.

The Good Turn by Dervla McTiernan is a police mystery that is the third book in the Cormac Reilly series. Police corruption, murder, drugs - it's a good mystery.

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros came out on January 21, and I practically inhaled it. It was a distraction that I needed. It was action-packed, and well, there are pretty awesome dragons! :)

message 12: by Joy D (last edited Jan 27, 2025 09:10AM) (new)

Joy D | 729 comments I have two this month - one fiction and one non-fiction:

Fiction:
Title: All the Glimmering Stars
Author: Mark T. Sullivan
Rating: 5 stars
Format: ebook/audio
ATY Prompt: I did not use it for this, but it would fit: 18. A book set primarily in nature
Brief Reason: I am impressed by the author’s ability to transform a historically significant trauma into a universal story about human dignity and resilience. Given the violent nature of the subject matter, it can often be a gut-wrenching read, but it shifts away from the bloodshed often enough to move beyond a “misery” narrative while still acknowledging the reality of the pain and suffering. It is a truly powerful reading experience.
My Review

Non-Fiction:
Title: The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook
Author: Hampton Sides
Rating: 5 stars
Format: ebook/audio
ATY Prompt: 35. A book from the NPR "Books We Love" Lists, and would also fit 17. A history or historical fiction book set prior to 1925, and 18. A book set primarily in nature
Brief Reason: I was amazed at how many places Cook’s expedition visited. Sides does a great job of storytelling and pacing. This book is well-researched, well-written, and engrossing. It kept my interest from beginning to end. It does not glorify Cook nor denigrate him, but attempts to capture him as a person, with his strengths and flaws. Hampton Sides is one of my favorite non-fiction writers, and this book is one of his best.
My Review

Robin P | 4071 comments Mod
I give very few 5 stars but here are some strong 4-star books for the month

- Title: Obasan
- Author: Joy Kogawa
- Rating: 4.5
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio) - Print
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable) 41. A book that involves digging up the past OR 44. A haunting book
- Brief reason why it was the best: I had no idea that Canada, like the US, at the beginning of WWII, removed their own citizens of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast, seized their property and sent them to camps. This book is fiction but highly based on the author's own experience as a child during the war.

- Title: Madame Restell: The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Old New York's Most Fabulous, Fearless, and Infamous Abortionist
- Author: Jennifer Wright
- Rating: 4
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio) - print
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 17. A history or historical book set prior to 1925
- Brief reason why it was the best: This woman had an amazing life. I will be giving a talk about her next month. This book is for a general audience and has some comments interspersed comparing the time to today.

- Title: Laurentian Divide
- Author: Sarah Stonich
- Rating: 4
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio) - audio
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 45. A book by an author whose publishing career spans at least 10 years
- Brief reason why it was the best: Very good evocation of a place (northern Minnesota). About halfway through, I almost gave up because a number of characters had traumatic pasts, but by the end, it was uplifting.

message 15: by Ulrike (new)

Ulrike | 8 comments - Title: Quendel
- Author: Caroline Ronnefeldt
- Rating: 5 *
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio): Print
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 20. A book with an animal, vegetable (plant), or mineral in the title
- Brief reason why it was the best: It is a rather slow paced reading experience with great world building and an interesting cast of protagonists. The book gets incredibly dark at times, but for me as an inexperienced horror reader, it was the right amount of darkness.

I agree. This one is definitely going to shoot straight to #1 on the best seller lists. I found it multi-layered, with deeply emotional moments that had me either smiling or crying. It's fantastic.

I had a couple of really good ones so far -- I still have Motheater to finish before the end of the month, so I may end up adding it as well, because it certainly LOOKS good.

But my faves so far were

- Title: Last Circle of Love
- Author: Lorna Landvik
- Rating: 5☆
- Format: (Print)
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): #06 ~ A book with a serpentine element on the cover
- Brief reason why it was the best: This short little book has a lot to say about the difference between erotica and love. It was an adorable book - with believable characters and a fresh persepective on love between those who have been together for a lifetime. Probably because I identify with their age group (I'm 67), I found it delightful.

- Title: My Mother Cursed My Name
- Author: Anamely Salgado Reyes
- Rating : 5☆
- Format : (Print)
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable) : #3 ~ A book connected to something mentioned in the Do Re Mi song
- Brief reason why it was the best : This one appears to be all over the map in terms of ratings and reviews, so I'm fairly sure it's a clear target audience. You have to be a mom, a daughter, and a grandma to really get all the various nuances between the conversations and feelings that are universal among a three generational female family. I found it totally delightful. Grandma's ghost is a total hoot!

message 19: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 428 comments - Title: Night Watch
- Author: Terry Pratchett
- Rating: 5
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio): Print
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 2 books with opposites in their titles (I'll also read Day Watch
- Brief reason why it was the best: This is discworld at its finest.

message 20: by Jillian (last edited Jan 28, 2025 09:56AM) (new)

Jillian | 2958 comments - Title: The History of Sound
- Author: Ben Shattuck
- Rating: 5⭐️
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio): Audio
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 8. A collection of short stories or novellas, essays, poetry, or a mix of various brief writings
- Brief reason why it was the best:
Highly recommend the audio. I'm definitely not a fan of short stories and this one was excellent. The stories are woven together so that you now how they fit. There still is the element that you want to know more.

Alistair | 53 comments - Title: Heartstopper: Volume One
- Author: Alice Oseman
- Rating: 5
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio): I used an eBook from Libby, but I'm sure it's in print as well.
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): 24. A book with a main character who is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, or a criminal
- Brief reason why it was the best: It has lovable characters; it's adorable; and I couldn't get enough of it.

message 23: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 196 comments - Title: The Message
- Author: Ta-Nehisi Coates
- Rating: 4.5 Stars
- Format: Audio
- ATY Prompt you used it for: #8- a collection of essays
- Brief reason why it was the best: Lyrical yet poignant reflections on the power of stories to connect people across distances and the importance of hearing from underrepresented voices.

- Title: The Moor's Account
- Author: Laila Lalami
- Rating: 4.5 Stars
- Format: Print
- ATY Prompt you used it for: #17- a historical fiction book set prior to 1925. Can also be used for the nature prompt
- Brief reason why it was the best: A captivating tale of survival and unlikely bonds amid a failed Spanish expedition in North America, told from the perspective of a North African slave—an often erased voice in history. This just makes me more excited for Lalami's new novel this year!

Format: Print
AtY prompt: not used for this challenge
Reason it was the best: historical fiction beautifully enmeshed with sensitive depiction of difficult family relationships

Title: Juice
Author: Tim Winton
Rating: 5
Format: Print
AtY prompt: 4. A book set underground, under sea or in an underworld
Reason it was the best: set in the future and very political (both genres I am usually not at all interested in), but so believable and engrossing. Tim Winton is always worth reading!

message 28: by Joanna G (new)

Joanna G (joanna_g) | 410 comments Two five-star reads for me this month.

Title: The Guncle
Author: Steven Rowley
Rating: 5 stars
Format: Print
ATY Prompt you used it for: Used it for 2 - a prompt that didn't make the list, using main character without a job.
Brief reason why it was the best: I expected it to be light breezy and fun, without much substance, but it actually had quite a serious core in a way that gave it weight and will make it last much more for me than the book I thought it was.

Title: Bury Your Gays
Author: Chuck Tingle
Rating: 5 stars
Format: Print
ATY Prompt you used it for: Sunset vibes on the cover
Brief reason why it was the best: I don't think I've ever read a book before that made me laugh, cry, and want to sleep with the lights on! Just deft at evoking all the emotions and really brilliant plotting about what's really behind some nightmare monsters. Not for those who can't handle horror though - it had both gory and scary moments aplenty.

- Title All Systems Red
- Author Martha Wells
- Rating 5 stars
- Format (Print, eBook, Audio) Audio
- ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable) A book of secrets, lies, or deception
- Brief reason why it was the best I don't normally like science fiction books - but this is one of those ones that made me eat my words! Got swept away and ended up reading the entire series.

Format (Print, eBook, Audio): Hardcover (Folio edition)
ATY Prompt you used it for (if applicable): I haven’t decided yet, but am leaning towards the “Two books with a common theme in different genres” prompt
Brief reason why it was the best: It’s a well-constructed narrative about the most infamous maritime disaster of the modern era. The hardcover edition included wonderful photos, diagrams, and illustrations, which added a lot to the experience.

message 36: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1342 comments Title: More or Less Maddy
Author: Lisa Genova
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Format: ebook
ATY Prompt you used it for: 24. A book with a main character who is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, or a criminal. I felt a bit bad about slotting it here as it's based on a character with bipolar disorder and I don't want to label, but I've gone with the fact that in 1985 when the Breakfast Club was out someone with bipolar disorder would have been called a basket case.
Brief reason why it was the best: grabbed me from the first page and I didn't want to put it down. Gave me a sense of feeling what the highs and lows of life are like with bipolar disorder

message 37: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 25 comments In January I read 10 books - and TWO ended up being 5-star books, which, for me, is HUGE. I'm 51 and in my entire life I only consider 23 books 5-star!

Why best: While set in the 1930s, it speaks so clearly to the situation in which we find ourselves now. Lewis was the first American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Author Alix E. Harrow
Rating 4 stars (It was a five star read until the epilogue)
Format Print
ATY Prompt you used it for 44. A haunting book.
Brief reason why it was the best It was deliciously creepy, with a slow burn romance and it kept building and was just so good. It lost a point because the ending was a little too "And they all lived happily ever after and their problems all just went away once the defeated the (view spoiler)" but I can't stop thinking about the book.

message 43: by Bea (new)

Bea | 446 comments Title: Deerskin
Author: Robin McKinley
Rating: 5*
Format: eBook (Kindle)
ATY Prompt you used it for: none
Brief reason why it was the best: I seldom give 5* to books. My criteria is that it has to impact my life in some way. This book was just so outstanding that I had to give it that rating.
I found it on a healing fiction list...and as it was a Kindle book I had had for years, I chose to read it.
The story deals with rape and battering by a father to a daughter...and follows that daughter as she escapes and begins to live even though she has lost her memory. It has magical elements in it...but the author recognizes the severity of the trauma to her psyche and does not minimize it...she simply allows her character to find healing and support.
I was in a depressed mood when I read this and lived the character within the story...and found my own healing.

message 44: by Jennie (new)

Jennie Brueck | 9 comments Title - Miss Morgan's Book Brigade
Author - Janet Skeslien Charles
Rating - 5*
Format - ebook on Kindle
ATY Prompt you used it for - A book with a cover that has an image of something that starts with A, T, or Y
Brief Reason why it was the best - I absolutely love historical fiction and things about books. This was a story of how books made connections and gave hope for people who's lives had been torn apart by war. It gave the children some normalcy, it gave an escape for those who had gone through horrendous ordeals, and it helped others find happiness where it had been hard to see. Just a true gem about helping those in need.

ATY Prompt you used it for:
28. Two books with a pair of opposites in their titles: Book 1
(to be paired with Goodbye, Vitamin)
There is also a character who is an artist, so you could use this for
23. A book that involves art, music, dancing or acting

Brief reason why it was the best:
This is the kind of story I love, where the characters explore their feelings and grow from that. Also, a found family sort of feel (another favorite of mine). This is a story that takes place over roughly 50 years, but with big jumps in time, so it focuses primarily on two time periods, with another brief section at the beginning to show you how the main characters came to be who they are. Hard at places, but lovely.

Answer the following questions:

- Title The Baptism of Fire
- Author Andrzej Sapkowski
- Rating 4
- Format: Audio
- ATY Prompt you used it for: 30 - A Monster Book
-Brief reason why it was the best: I really enjoyed the addition of new characters in this book. It felt a bit different from other books in this series in that nothing really gets accomplished in the main quest. It was more of an adventure type book that is gathering this band of characters together while they travel. The book just keeps building this world and the tension is increasing and all these moving parts haven't quite clicked into place yet, but you know it's coming.

Your review is enough to catch my eye.

I wish my (sadly rusty) receptive German was good enough to read this without resorting to the dictionary! I can understand the gist of what's going on from the blurb, and from context, of course, but would need to look up some of the words.

Is the language of the book itself much more difficult? Or is it just a straightforward adventure/horror book? I might check it out for myself unless it's written in a style (e.g. very idiomatically) that would be hard for a non-fluent/L2 reader to understand.

That's hard to answer. The book is classified as YA by the publisher, so the level of difficulty should be suitable even for a younger audience and then perhaps also be understandable for non-fluent/L2 readers.
But the author uses a lot of "old" words to set the atmosphere of the book. This might make it a little harder to read and enjoy for you. If you are still interested, you could read the reading sample on the publisher's website and decide for yourself.
