The Training Yard
Let me share my very first Battle – January 4th, 2015 - Sewer RatA very green adventurer, Lady Zuzana, wanders through the woods north of Queen Skye’s castle, eager for her first taste of adventure. The morning air is crisp, the ground blanketed in pristine snow, and all seems eerily still. Even the foul monsters that supposedly plague the kingdom appear to be asleep.
Just as frustration begins to creep in, she spots a dark patch in the snow—a hole in the earth. Curious, she steps closer to investigate, only to be met with a pair of beady eyes glaring up at her. A foul-looking Sewer Rat scurries out from what must be its burrow, its fur matted, its teeth bared.
Wait… aren’t sewer rats supposed to be in sewers?
The thought barely registers before the savage critter lunges. There's no time to hesitate—it’s time for Lady Zuzana’s first battle!
Battle Commences

Lady Zuzana’s Stats:
LVL 1 || HP: 10 || Sword: Level 0 (2 AP) || Magic Staff: Level 0 (2 AP) || XP: 3
- no pets, no potions, nothing in Lady Zuzana's inventory ;-)
Sewer Rat’s Stats:
AP: 3 || HP: 5
• Lady Zuzana attacks with her Magic Staff (2 AP) → Sewer Rat: 5 - 2 = 3 HP
• Sewer Rat retaliates (3 AP) → Lady Zuzana: 10 - 3 = 7 HP
• Lady Zuzana strikes again (2 AP) → Sewer Rat: 3 - 2 = 1 HP
• Sewer Rat fights back (3 AP) → Lady Zuzana: 7 - 3 = 4 HP
•Lady Zuzana delivers the final blow (2 AP) → Sewer Rat: 1 - 2 = Dead
Battle Outcome:
Lady Zuzana: -6 HP, +1 XP
Updated Stats:
LVL 1 || HP: 4 || Sword: Level 0 (2 AP) || Magic Staff: Level 0 (2 AP) || XP: 4
The battle was fierce. The rat managed to sink its teeth into Lady Zuzana’s legs twice, leaving painful wounds. But in the end, the hero emerged victorious. It took three hits from her magic staff to bring down the beast. A small victory, but a victory nonetheless.
As she catches her breath, Lady Zuzana realizes one thing—she has a long journey ahead. It’s time to train, sharpen her skills, and invest in stronger weapons.
The adventure has only just begun.
The Training Yard Reward (Sewer Rat - Common Monster): + 1 XP
The Goblin’s Ambush - February 1st, 2015 (Yeah, it's another battle from the ancient times 😅)Lady Zuzana strode through the moon-lit forest, the scent of damp earth filling the air as she followed a narrow path between twisted trees. After her previous encounters, she had grown stronger, her weapons more powerful, her senses sharper. But nothing could have prepared her for what lurked ahead.
A rustling in the underbrush sent a chill down her spine. Before she could react, a shrill cackle pierced the night, and from the shadows, a small, green figure leaped onto the path, brandishing a crude but wickedly sharp wooden spear.
"A traveler! Easy pickings!" the goblin sneered, licking its lips as it jabbed the air in warning.
Zuzana gripped her magic staff tightly. "You should have stayed in the shadows, little fiend."
With practiced precision, she channeled her energy, the tip of her staff glowing an intense blue. She swung it forward, striking the goblin over its ugly head.
A stray thought flickered in her mind as she fought—why in the Novel Kingdom was every staff used for battle called a "magic staff"? It was, in all practical terms, a physical weapon, not a conduit for spellcasting. The patrons at the Local Tavern had tried to explain once. Apparently, it was meant to add dignity to the act of bashing one's foes with a blunt stick. It certainly sounded more impressive to say she was "funneling her power through a mighty magic staff" rather than admitting she was simply clubbing monsters into submission.
But this was not the time for musings—Lady Zuzana focused on the battle at hand.
Battle Commences:

Lady Zuzana's Starting Stats: LVL 4 || HP: 16/16 || Sword: 0 (AP: 2)|| Magic Staff: 3 (AP: 5)|| XP: 30
- No potions, no pets, no companions, empty inventory
Goblin's Stats: 6 Attack || 10 Health
• Hero Attacks Monster with Magic Staff (5 AP) → Monster: 10 - 5 = 5 HP
• Monster Attacks Hero (6 AP) → Hero: 16 - 6 = 10 HP
• Hero Attacks Monster with Magic Staff (5 AP) → Monster: 5 - 5 = Dead
Victory!
Lady Zuzana: -6 HP, +1 XP, +1 Goblin Bone (The next Goblin will emerge precisely one week after the last one was defeated. - 2/8/15)
Updated Stats: LVL 4 || HP: 10/16 || Sword: 0 (AP: 2)|| Magic Staff: 3 (AP: 5)|| XP: 31
The goblin’s wooden spear had been more dangerous than she anticipated, leaving a nasty gash along her side. But two well-placed strikes had been enough to put the creature down.
Panting, Zuzana pressed a hand to her wound, wincing. The goblin had put up a fight, but in the end, she had emerged victorious. She knelt beside the defeated creature, retrieving a gnarled bone from its belongings—a trophy of her battle, as well as a useful ingredient for future enchantments.
With a weary sigh, she straightened. The road ahead remained perilous, but each battle brought her one step closer to becoming the warrior she was meant to be.
The Training Yard Reward (Goblin - Common Monster): + 1 XP
Tip for Beginner Adventurers: At the start of your journey, battles will almost always leave you with injuries. To keep progressing and gaining experience, it’s crucial to find ways to heal. I highly recommend getting a bunny from the Easter Bilby quest—it delivers a delicious chocolate egg each week that restores 3 HP. Additionally, stock up on healing potions whenever possible by completing scrounger hunt quests, where you can trade books for potions. There are other ways to heal, but the ones I mention here are beginner-friendly. Stay prepared, and your adventure will be much smoother!

Kelpie examples:Before battle, assess your foe! Kelpie is magic, so must be attacked with magic. It has 30 hit points. Most of our magic spells hit for a minimum of 10 hit points. So, the longest this battle should take is 2.5 rounds; that is, 3 attacks from the Hero and 2 attacks from the Foe. Kelpie does max of 10 damage, so Hero should be able to absorb 20 hit points of damage, or have healing potions available.
Consider using a Air spell, as they are strong against Kelpies. This will shorten the battle to 1.5 rounds, even if only one Air spell is used. Avoid Fire spells, as they are weak.
Personally, I don’t like taking damage if I don’t have to and I also like collecting extra loot, so lately I’ve been using a Pets Plus Potion (PPP) to take out the Kelpie in one shot.
Hero defeats Kelpie in 1 round with Whirlwind (strong) + Magik Shard + Horse + Puppy + Falcon (10+1+1+2+1)*2 = 30 atk), Cat + Lucky 13 Collar (2+1)*2=6 atk). 30-6-30. Reward: 3 xp, 1 kelpie skin.
Not very exciting, but very quick!
Here’s how it would go with just basic Whirlwind spell:
Hero with Whirlwind (strong = 20 atk), 43 hp (my max hp)
vs.
Kelpie: 10 atk, 30 hp
• Whirlwind: -20 = 10 hp
• Foe attacks: -10 = 33 hp
• Whirlwind: -20 = dead
Reward: 3 xp, 1 kelpie skin
Hero = __ hp, __ xp (always good to track hp & xp after fights!)

Ray, I love your explanation of your battle strategy—it's really helpful!
You might want to add a note that you're hiring the twins as mercenaries for extra loot. Some newbies might be confused about how the number of Kelpie Skins got doubled.

@zusanna the Kelpie skins were doubled using Hat Hat. It’s noted in there so you probably just missed it :)
Ray, I am afraid that Hat hat works only on common monsters. Its description specifically states " non-timed".

No problem, Ray. It can happen especially with "rarer" items or items we use sporadically. Sometimes specifics fade away from out mind with time.

Sir PeepocalypseStats: 33 attack, 99 health.
This huge marshmallow-padded chicken uses its inherent special ability, Sugar Crash, against you. It overwhelms you with sugary sweetness, muddling your mind and rendering magic and advanced weaponry useless. Your primary weapon's base attack is reduced to one third of its original power (e.g., sword LVL 15 hits for 5 AP + 2 weapon bonus + pets + inventory and other bonuses). Magic and other weapons don't work against this hopped-up-on-sugar menace at all.
Tactical tip: To reduce Sir Peepocalypse's attack power, throw a carrot at him at the beginning of each turn. This offsets the sugar overload with something healthy, reducing his attack by 10 AP.

Splintercat examples:Before battle, assess your foe! Splinter is magic, so must be attacked with magic. It has 30 hit points. Most of our magic spells hit for a minimum of 10 hit points. So, the longest a battle against 1 Splitercat should take is 2.5 rounds; that is, 3 attacks from the Hero and 2 attacks from the Foe. Splintercat does 8 damage, so Hero should be able to absorb 16 hit points of damage, or have healing potions available.
Consider using an Earth spell, as they are strong against Splintercats. This will shorten the battle to 1.5 rounds, even if only one Earth spell is used. Avoid Air spells, as they are weak.
Splintercats must be baited with 3 pieces of Drop Bear Meat, and they only take the bait once every 2 weeks.

Snowflake HeartA large silvery Yeti that only shows up during snowy holidays. It has 6 limbs and icy armour. In order to start fighting it you will need to throw a Phoenix Feather at it (uses a turn - it will attack you first). You can throw a Phoenix Feather as your attack, for 20 damage. Pop 6
6 Attack 66 Health
Alright, we know the drill by now. Foe assessment: Non-magical, phoenix feathers are HIGH damage, it has a low attack. Seems pretty easy! We have to throw a phoenix feather to get its attention, after which it gets the first attack, and then probably three more phoenix feathers to knock off 60 hp, and then we can finish it off with a regular weapon. So, looks like it’ll be able to attack us 4 times – need to be able to absorb 24 hp of damage or have heal potions available. Easiest to fight it if we have 4 phoenix feathers. There are 6 of these in the world, so 24 phoenix feathers total… might have to space out the attacks whilst collecting those. If your weapon(s) are very upgraded, or you have a Life spell available, something that will hit for MORE than 20 hp per round, using that might be better if the phoenix feathers are hard to come by.
Level 5 Hero, 18 hp
vs.
Snowflake Heart: 6 atk, 66 hp
• Hero throws phoenix feather to start battle
• Foe attacks: -6 = 12 hp
• Hero throws phoenix feather: -20 = 46 hp
• Foe attacks: -6 = 6 hp
• Hero throws phoenix feather: -20 = 26 hp
• Hero drinks Minor Heal Potion = 11 hp
• Foe attacks: -6 = 5 hp
• Hero throws phoenix feather: -20 = 6 hp
• Hero drinks Minor Heal Potion = 11 hp
• Foe attacks: -6 = 5 hp
• Hero attacks with [anything that does 6+ damage]: -6 = dead
Reward: 6 xp, 1 Snowflake Arm
Hero = __ hp, __ xp (always good to track hp & xp after fights!)
If you don’t have phoenix feathers, you can’t fight the Snowflake Heart because you can’t get its attention! You can acquire a phoenix through the From Ashes Comes My Bird quest. Also, some of us adventurers (cough *me* cough) have been around for ages and have LOTS of phoenix feathers. Perhaps just asking nicely in the Tavern will get you a donation.

Rock
Many people might mock you for attempting to subdue the mighty rock. It's lasted for millions of years, who are you to try to best this foul beast. But you are not cowed by this formidable task. You will persevere!
1 (+2 per Rock already killed) atk, 5 (+5 per Rock already killed) hp. (Population: 10)
Reward: 10 Experience, 3 Gold, 1 Pebble
Ooooh, complicated atk and hp for these rocks! Let’s break it down: (view spoiler)
The first few at least are pretty easy to defeat, and with 10 xp from each, you’ll be leveling up fairly quickly! Remember, your hp refills to max when you level up, so time that accordingly. The Rocks were the first thing I attacked when I started. Killing just 3 of them is enough xp to push you to Level 4, raising your max hp to 16! Seemed like a good way to get stronger fast.
After defeating Rock #5, you can turn in 5 pebbles for a Pet Rock via the Rocky the Rock quest. Your pet rock will subtract 1 atk point from every creature you fight, thus making Rocks #6-10 slightly easier to defeat.
Rock #1 (view spoiler)
Assuming you’ve done nothing else to earn xp, Rock #2 will take you to Level 3, and Rock #3 to Level 4! So, skipping up to Rock #4. I’m gonna up the weapon to Level 4 too, just to balance it out a bit.
Rock #4 (view spoiler)
Oof, that was a harder fight! Definitely should look into upgrade weapons a little more, but also, there’s that Pet Rock we can get if we defeat 1 more Rock… Let’s try… after we’re healed up to max ofc, which could be accomplished by earning 5 xp elsewhere, thus Leveling up to Level 5.
Rock #5 (view spoiler)
Now, go get your Pet Rock! Mine’s named Jasper because I thought it was weird that they were all named Rocky ;)
Sir Ray collects +2 xp, +2 gold… I think? (I'll ask in the Tavern)

Of course, the battle will go slightly differently if you have a puppy, falcon, cat, shield gems, etc. I have basically all.the.things, so here’s what my battle looks like: (view spoiler)
TL;DR I suggest not attempting without:
• Horse Rug
• two uses of the Splash Spell (need training and 2 Kelpie Skin, 2 Pail of Water)
• any 1 (non-earth) spell (need training and ingredients)
• at least 32 hp
• the ability to heal 23 hp during the battle.
Note: Having a higher starting hp results in needing to heal less than indicated.
To attempt without the Horse Rug, you’ll need:
• two uses of the Splash Spell (need training and 2 Kelpie Skin, 2 Pail of Water)
• any 5 (non-earth) spells (need training and ingredients)
• at least 32 hp
• the ability to heal 73 hp during the battle.
Note: Having a higher starting hp results in needing to heal less than indicated.

Sewer Rat example
Anyone with a weapon that does 5+ damage, or anyone trained in any spell, can kill a Sewer Rat in one hit! It’s a good starting monster too though. Here’s a break down of a fight if you’re a brand new Hero, Level 1, with a Level 0 weapon: (view spoiler)
Easy peasy! Just remember that once you hit Level 8, Sewer Rats flee from you and you can no longer fight them.

Nook Squirrel examplesQuick breakdown: Arrives weekly on Sunday. Air element, weak to Earth. Using an Earth spell can get you another Squirrel to fight: “Casting Earth magik on one will cause it to freeze to the ground in fear of the spell causing an additional Nook squirrel to come and join his companion to investigate. The companion will join before the spell damage hits.” 20 hp and 10 atk.
* If you can cast Tremor, you’re all set; you can one-shot the Nook Squirrel.
* If you can cast Tremor and have a Horse Rug, you can one-shot TWO Nook Squirrels!
* Fighting with physical weapons: a weapon that does at least 10 damage can take out a Squirrel in 2 rounds with 10 or fewer damage done to your Hero.

This looks good! My only question is about the last round - the red gem doesn't apply to pets (sorry if I'm reading your notes wrong), does it apply to the poison weapon enhancements?

The SwarmThe swarm is ruled by a Queen Bee. Every turn she will call upon her drones to assist her. The number of drones that come to her aid each turn is equal to the number of creatures currently attacking. (Example: Only Queen Bee, the next round will have Queen Bee and 1 Drone. If there is a Queen Bee and 7 Drones, the next round will have Queen Bee and 15 Drones (7+8)). Each round you may only attack one creature unless you are using area of attack abilities, then your attack hits all creatures currently in the battle. The Swarm is not magical.
Queen Bee: 20 Attack 100 Health
Drone Bee: 4 Attack 10 Health
Reward: 40 Experience, White Gem of Power

Let’s figure out how many drones will be in each round, if we plan to leave them for the end and take them all out with the Horse Rug. (view spoiler)
Recommendations:
1. Be able to do 25 damage per round, and have at least 32 hp
~or~
2. Be able to reduce Foes’ attacks by 3, able to do 20 damage per round, and have at least 26 hp.
3. Have a Horse and Horse Rug. It is possible to do without the Horse Rug, but you’ll end up killing 1 Drone a round for how-ever-many rounds there are Drones and taking damage from the rest as you do. However, after you kill the Queen Bee, no new Drones appear.

Welcome to the Training Yard!
Ah, the smell of sweat, the clang of swords, and the faint sound of someone arguing that actually, their chicken companion was essential to defeating a fire-breathing dragon. Welcome, brave adventurer, to the bustling hub of tactics, triumphs, and probably a few questionable decisions—The Training Yard!
Here, seasoned warriors and aspiring heroes alike gather to swap battle tales, share strategies, and maybe boast just a little (yes, we see you, Sir Reginald and your "solo goblin army takedown"). It’s not just a place to flex your might, though. It’s also where battle newbies can glean wisdom from the pros, and where pros can claim well-deserved rewards for their dazzling victories.
So, how does it work? Simply post the details of your heroic escapades—past battles, future battle plans, or even clever templates to help the less experienced. Be sure to include the nitty-gritty: your weapons, items, potions, pets, or other allies that helped you triumph. Veteran players, we’re counting on you to add a little pizzazz. Turn those tactical recaps into gripping stories or dramatic re-enactments!
And what’s in it for you? Oh, just glory and some extra loot:
• Common & Timed Monsters: +1 XP
• Uncommon & Event Monsters (Halloween, Easter, Group Events): +2 XP, +2 Gold
• Magical Monsters (Common, Timed & Uncommon): +3 XP, +1 spell ingredient of your choice (consult the Ye Olde FAQ thread for options)
• Magical Monsters (Rare): +5 XP, +3 Gold +1 spell ingredient of your choice (consult the Ye Olde FAQ thread for options)
• Rare Monsters: +5 XP, +10 Gold
Important Note: You can only claim rewards once per monster type (no, you can’t keep submitting goblin battles, that would be boring!). And battles must be comprehensible—details are key!
Spectators are also welcome to join the fun. Cheer, critique, or offer feedback as the great tales unfold before you. Who knows? You might just witness the next epic saga in the making.
So, step up, warriors! Prove your mettle, share your battles, and inspire the kingdom! (And if you need a break, the Tavern is that way…)
