Hi Everyone!

If you had to pick your main character to be any fantasy creature, what would it be? (Werewolf, Dragon, vampire, witch, etc)

Kristina Kamaeva | 89 comments My favorite fantasy creatures are dragons! I've already written a novel with dragons as main characters, but I won't be translating it into English any time soon. My dragons are intelligent creatures and they can teleport, communicate, using telepathy, and sometimes they take human form.
My favorite dragons from books by other authors are Morkeleb from Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly and the dragons of Earthsea from Ursula Le Guin's The Earthsea Trilogy

Jabotikaba | 120 comments You sound like my long lost soul sister! It's so nice to meet someone who's also read Barbara Hambly's books and doesn't need to be told who Jenny and Morkeleb are.
And I love the EarthSea trilogy as well.
And my favourite magical creature would be the dragon, of course.

Does Nymph count?

I mean...has to be Dragons. What could be cooler? :) All those other ones have their place, but Dragons kind of rule the roost. Sorry, pesky vampires and werewolfs, but you'll just get burnt.

Olivia Gonzalez (osgonzalez) | 31 comments I love dragons! I just think that their varying myth and lore, as well as their incorporation in various fantasy books and series are absolutely amazing!

I will say, I do also enjoy vampires, though I think creatively they don't have the same oomph now as they did in classic literature

I remember it was so beautifully written that I wanted to become a dragon :)

I love Carmilla- the story itself as well as the history of the couple it was based off of is really fascinating and well written. I also really enjoyed Interview with the Vampire by Ann Rice

Me too! Barbara Hambly is such a gifted writer. When you read her Winterlands books, you really see what she describes as if through the eyes of a dragon. It's as if you're flying high in the sky, looking down on these lands from above.

Sounds very interesting!
I also like kitsune, by the way. What about elves and other magical races? They're more magical peoples than creatures, so there should probably be a separate thread about them. Maybe I shouldn't write about the Sithi and Norns from Ted Williams' books here.

Dragons is the obvious but I will still like to mention Hippogriff.
A Hippogriff would be my Patronus :) " Reducto.

Wow, I never heard about Carmilla. I should read it. Barbara Hambley has a novel about vampires Those Who Hunt the Night I read it long time ago. I remember that some of Terry Pratchett's books had vampires in them.
Most recently, I read The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black.

Oh, I hardly read books about kitsune. Maybe this one Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling!
I read a very good one in Russian. I don't know if it's translated

Those Who Hunt the Night sounds epic! Just added it to my TBR. I highly recommend Carmilla- it is a novel that predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by 25 years! The version I read had a forward by Carmen Maria Machado, who talks about the history of the novel itself. It will make you extremely frustrated towards the author lol but if you read it, you'll understand why. Still, it's one of my top recommendations to those who love queer gothic literature.

Jabotikaba | 120 comments Those Who Hunt the Night is really a great book, like almost everything Barbara Hambly writes. It's a wonderful mix of crime story, horror and sci-fi.
I've heard about Carmilla and that this novel is a kind of prototype of Bram Stoker's famous book, but I haven't read it yet.

That's cool. I can't think of any books with hippogriffs, apart from Harry Potter. And Ariosto's poem, of course, where the characters fly on hippogriffs.
Kristina wrote:"Oh, I hardly read books about kitsune. Maybe this one Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling..."
I've also read Pu Songling's books. But among the classic books translated into English, my favourite is The Sorcerer's Revolt. This book was written by Luo Guanzhong, who is better known as the author of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Basically, it's the story of a fox shapeshifter family, consisting of a cunning old mother, a beautiful daughter and a son who likes to sleep with human women. He is the cause of all the fox family's problems, and his unfortunate love affair is sort of the starting point of the whole story. The husband of the human woman he was trying to seduce shot him with a crossbow, wounding him in the paw. The wound turned out to be serious, the womanising fox began to limp, and then the whole family went to the capital to find him a good doctor.
Thus began all their adventures and misadventures. But I won't go on about it, because that way I could tell the whole book that way. It is very difficult for me to stop writing or talking when I start writing or talking about something I really like.
There are also many fantasy books that feature kitsune as characters, such as Shadow of the Fox.

Thank you for recommendations! Both sound very interesting!

Jabotikaba | 120 comments There are a lot of fantasy books with kitsune as main characters, but I chose the best written one. Unfortunately, many of these books are just clumsy fantasy romances.
