What makes a book 5 stars?

heyyy! that’s a really good (and tough) question! 😅 honestly, it’s a mix of a lot of things. if i look at all the books i’ve rated 5 stars, the one thing they all have in common is that they really pulled me in and leave me feeling something—whether it’s joy, sadness, frustration, or excitement. it can come from any number of things, really; the characters, the plot, the writing style, even the world-building. But i think if i don’t finish the book with some kind of emotional reaction, like a quiet ‘Oof’ under my breath (happy or sad), then it’s not quite there for me. a 5-star book has to stick with me, too, not just while i’m reading, but for days or weeks after. it’s the kind of book that keeps me thinking about it, or even makes me want to go back and re-read parts of it just to relive that experience and remember ✨
Usually, my five star reads have provided emotional damage that is unforgettable. Some haven't necessarily put me back together, but I'm totally okay with that. (half jk jk jk)Re-read value is also a plus, but not a requirement.
Srs note — it's a combination of the writing style, characters, plot, and immersion in the setting(s)/world (dare I say, a vibe), that make it a five star read for me. My five star reads tend to make me ~Feel a Lot of Emotions~. (I mostly read romance or romance subplot books these days.)

Is it the writing? The characters? The setting?
I am sooo so curious and would love to know your answers!"
All three of them! And the plot should be interesting too.
It honestly all depends on if I felt anything after reading it. It could be a really good book but I wouldn’t necessarily rate it five stars if it didn’t change my perspective or make me feel different about anything. That’s just how I think of it though
Hiiiiii, anyone who is reading this!! For me, I would say the plot. The build. Though the characters do make a large difference, the build is what makes me connect. The plot is the whole purpose of the book, and if it had a weak core, everything else falls.
A combination of the plot, the characters, the setting etc- where they all just feel perfect to me. I just know when a book is going to be five stars because I get this feeling and it’s when I truly love the characters and i long to be in that world with them. And when I have no criticism of the book
honestly i haven't read a 5 star book yet, my highest rating is like 4.7 😭 (maybe i'm just a harsh reviewer or i'm not that opinionated and i always read bad reviews)- has to have some sort of emotional impact-
- memorable
- easy to understand
- actually fun to read
- interesting plot/trope (or if it's an overused plot, then at least written well)
- has to be written well
- characters have to be good and not shallow yk
- the vibe in general ig
for me, a 5-star read has to have all of the following: - engaging plot from page 1
- characters I feel strongly about
- good prose (this is CRUCIAL)
- memorable and impactful; it has to make me feel something or make me think
How it's written has the biggest effect on me, so when it's written with longer sentences and peppered with metaphors, I'm all over it! 🤩 The characters need to feel real, like with their little quirks and saying things that feel like 'Oh, that's something they'd say'.
for me it’s enjoyment and emotion. i get very invested into most of the books i read so my love for the characters and how the story makes me feel is usually the deciding factor. if i enjoyed reading it then i’ll rate it higher even if it might not be the most well-written piece. emotions is a lot of it too. i’ll enjoy a book but if it makes me cry a lot or i think about it a lot afterwards i pretty much always give it five stars. books that make you feel are always the best— even when they break you and make you depressed for days. that’s how you know the author did a good job and that’s what matters to me.
I have to be completely honest, I don't bother finishing books I don't love most of the time, so if I finish a book it's sooo easy for it to get 4 or 5 stars from me. My ratings tend to be based mostly on how excited I am to come back to the book when I have to put it down - a 5 star book is one I'd read in one sitting if I didn't have to do things like, you know, my job.I did have to sit for a minute and think about what, specifically, it is that makes me want to come back to a book like that. Part of it is characters, for sure. Especially when an author creates a character who I know I'd hate irl, and makes them/ their story so interesting that I can't help wanting to read about them. (Abbott from I'm starting to Worry About this Black Box of Doom comes to mind).
The writing style is another big one. Another recent 5 star finish was Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield, which left me with so many questions that I really wish had gotten answered - but the writing was so captivating that I couldn't give it anything less.
(Now that I think about it too, the writing was a big factor in that last book, but I don't think adding in any of the answers I was looking for would've made it better- and it probably would've made it worse. So there's that.)
I'd say when it's a book I can't put down, can't stop thinking about in between reading sessions, want to tell everyone I know about it and it either makes me see the world in a new way or makes me rethink my perspective on something...
When after you close the book, you stare at the wall for a while. The entire thing is still in your head for days, or even weeks. And you would sell your soul, to read it again for the first time .
for me i don’t mind an overused troupe but it has to be written in a way that makes it original. also i have to feel so connected to the characters & the story that when i’m done reading it i go into a slump lol.
i agree with feeling sooooo atatched to the characters. but for mr once i finosh the book the only thing that makes it better is to start a new series and experience more emotional damage. its just a never ending cucle for me 🤣
something original and a really good plot twist or a genius plot like something really clever and thought -out
I have to love a character and the interactions that occur in a book. Has to have something that I didn't expect in it as well even if its something small. I want to feel all the emotions in a book as well.
At the end if it satisfies all my inner conflict and emotion about that book then it's a five star..its just the feeling you get at the end.
if it's all I can think about for the next week, it's 5 stars. the best example of this is probably The Hunger Games. SotR left be sobbing for days
the writing is always the main thing i look for in 5 star books, unlike 4 stars this book is absolutely perfect. The characters, the plot and the story line. But also another big thing is Jokes, are the characters funny?
background characters matter too.
all of these things lead to a great 5 star book.
But sometimes it’s different for every book, one 5 star book might be absolutely hilarious and cute while another 5 star book might be stoic and tear-inducing.
Simple: If I read a book and I give a 5-star review, that means it's the greatest book ever, and everyone else should read it. My taste is like totally superior (joking).
How I rate a book 5 stars hinges on a lot of different things, but the biggest thing is that the book is unforgettable. Whether it's the characters, the plot, or the atmosphere, there's something about it that even months later I still think about it.
a 5-star read for me has to have an amazing balance of great characters, well-executed ideas that feel like a fresh breath of air that consistently delivers from beginning to end. and especially thought-provoking messages that make me feel like i've truly learned something new that has deeply impacted my perspective on life. bonus if it's fun (whether it's emotional suffering or not lol).
. Villains. Motivations
. Backstory and world building
. I quite like when its part of a broader plot and ties in nicely.
A five star read to me:1. Is written very well.
2. Has a captivating story and good characters.
3. Makes me think a lot while reading, and I think about it for a long time after I finish reading
4. I want to talk to everyone about it!
5. Relevant to many people.
:)
I feel like it’s a few things. Personally I love a story told from more than one perspective. It keeps things more interesting. I also like when I cannot predict where the plot is going right away. I like strong characters who know who they are and have confidence. I can’t do the whole weak lost woman thing a lot of romance books do.

I was just curious to know what makes a book 5 stars for you
Is it the writing? The characters? The setting?
I am sooo so curious and would love to know your answers!
