Israel A History by Martin Gilbert

Israel: A History by Martin Gilbert

I'm starting to dedicate much more time to expanding the non-fiction section of my library, beginning with one of the pre-eminent historians of the 20th century, Sir Martin Gilbert.

Gilbert's work exemplifies the kind of literary history that the under existential threat by the frightening ubiquity of AI and the unrelenting, endless distraction of social media.

It's not going to be enough, for the future, merely to have such books on a Kindle or stored in a memory stick. The hard copies will be mandatory, if only as evidence of what came before.

I love to read nonfiction, and this one looks very good.

Wreade1872 | 942 comments The TIDE is coming back. Gift haul of very random items.. i have no idea how they are choosing these, but they look interesting (except for deadpool, i havn't even watched the deadpool wolverine film yet):
Roadside Picnic by Arkady Strugatsky , On Earth as It Is on Television by Emily Jane , Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe by Cullen Bunn , The Fifth Science by Exurb1a .

I did really like the last work i bought by Exurb1a, so that explains why i got the Fifth Science except when i mentioned liking the author they looked completely blank, the giftgiver had no idea who that author was. I refuse to ask any more questions :P .

Franky | 554 comments I'm really loving the Majipoor Series from Robert Silverberg, and just finished the second in the series, so I went ahead and bought the third one in the series, Valentine Pontifex Valentine Pontifex (Lord Valentine, #3) by Robert Silverberg . Look forward to reading it when there is time in the future.

I never read that one but remember watching the 70s film with Sissy Spacek as a kid.

I've seen the trailer - so I guess that does not count and I haven't been brave enough to watch either of the movies. What grabbed me about the novel was the opening starting with a news story, and I'm thinking this might be really interesting to read.

Marcus Vinicius | 12 comments The George Simenon’s works are being published in Brazil in a new (and I hope well crafted) translation. All of them. So I bought the first volume, with four Maigret cases. Let’s see…

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2249 comments Just learned that Bea Uusma published a new book. I will have to wait for the translation. I am sure it will be awesome. She wrote The Expedition about what happened to the S.A. Andrée that was lost in 1897.

She is litteraly turning every stone to find out. Read this and be amazed:

Bea Uusma, a doctor and author of the August Prize-winning book The Expedition, has spent two decades trying to solve the polar historical mystery of the Andrée expedition's cause of death. For the first time ever, permission has now been granted for archaeological excavation on Vitön. ...
Bea Uusma:

– This will be the biggest project of my life. When the last camp of the Andrée expedition was found on Vitön in 1930, they took the expedition's remains with them, which were then cremated. But the camp was never excavated, and I have now realized that more than 200 skeletal remains were left on the island. So a third of the Andrée expedition may still be on Vitön. Now we have to find those bones. My group includes archaeologists, an osteologist (bone expert) and two archaeological dogs. The archaeological dogs are trained to find historical human bones – if there are any bones left, they will be scattered on the vast beach, among millions of stones.

– The information that the bones can give us will be an incredibly important piece of the puzzle in trying to solve the mystery of what happened....

I had no idea about archaeological dogs...

Wow, reading a series that you love must be one of the greatest pleasures a bookworm can have. How nice. You must be excited about the new release.
