In February we will be reading Brighton Rock by Graham Greene for our Crime category - who's in?

I noticed Phil also 4-Starred this one, so seems we're in agreement!
I was mainly impressed by how well-crafted/economical the storytelling was

I really enjoyed this one! The story was moving very well I thought and there were some really interesting characters. This was basically a type of novel in which one roots for the "bad guy" (deeply flawed as he was) as I felt that Ida was getting on me nerves (occasionally). But of course in the real world I would be totally supportive of anything she did, but it seemed to be at odds with Rose's idealistic views of honor and her idea of "going all the way" with Pinkie, as it was masterfully framed by GG.

Phil (lanark) | 656 comments I felt it was at its best when dealing with the Brighton underworld and the informal manhunt bravely organised by Ida and lost focus when honing in on Pinkie and Rose's Catholicism. It could have been a fabulous British Noir in the mould of Dashiel Hammet, but fell just short.
