Hello everyone! As we're coming up on time for our book club "Yellowface" would be curious to hear your thoughts if you've read so far. Caution if you haven't finished the book yet or don't want spoilers!
Questions to consider: ⁃ Why do we think June believes Athena owes her for “taking things from her”? ⁃ What does vindictive, bitterness do to a person over time? Jealous inquiry becomes curiosity becomes obsession becomes habit ⁃ What zodiac would you assign to Juniper? ⁃ Isn’t it wild she realizes after all this desires achievement come to reality that she actually liked Athena’s role in her life ⁃ Highlander syndrome? ⁃ Chapter 11 is there a benefit to sticking your head in the sand vs knowing all parts of the problem so you can prepare for it? - As this book is written by an Asian woman about a White woman, how does this affect your view on approaching racial conversations?
General stream of consciousness thoughts as I read along: - Chapter one June seems different than Chapter 4 June. ⁃ Jealousy to the point of obsession isn’t foreign ⁃ “Couldn’t do this to Athena’s legacy” - aka she needs to cover her ass ⁃ Google says the following characteristics are associated with the color yellow: creativity, communication, optimism, cheerfulness, and anxiety ⁃ This character is really set in her own self-righteous ways so it makes the reader think (potentially) everyone is against her ⁃ LOL so the interaction between her mentee and her when she asks if she’s Asian or not. I feel like this white lash has her side but also doesn’t get the other side ⁃ How the reviewer she likes most is an asshole to Athena ⁃ This lady (June) seems like a hater
The ultimate question is - is June the VILLAIN or the VICTIM????! Let us know what you think of the book below :)
