Nesting is a beautifully written novel about escaping an emotionally abusive marriage. It is set in Ireland in 2018-2019. Protagonist Ciara leaves home with her two young daughters, but her husband Ryan keeps trying to lure her back. She initially has no means of support. Her family lives in England and she cannot take the children out of the country without her husband’s consent. The storyline follows the way she deals with the many challenges faced by women in this situation, with added complications due to Ireland’s religious history. The tension increases whenever Ciara interacts with Ryan. I cared deeply about the fate of Ciara and her children, hoping they could find a way through the constant intimidation, gaslighting, and criticism. Even the ancillary characters are superbly rendered. I am amazed this is a debut novel. 5 stars.
