LOVE this book. Last time I listened to the audio, performed by Gary Sinise. Though I'd read it before, and seen at least two live theatre performances of the work, so knew what was coming, I found myself ugly crying in my car in the grocery store parking lot for a good 15 minutes before I could compose myself enough to go in and do my necessary shopping. A powerful work!
I also highly recommend Blaze by Richard Bachman (a/k/a/ Stephen King). It's an homage to OM&M but stands on its own. I would say it is darker and more edgy than Steinbeck's work, but equally impactful.

What a gut punch of a novella. Ever read a part of a book and as you are reading you are yelling "No, no, no!!!" That is this story.
George Milton and Lenny Small are traveling to a farm to work. Lenny is big and powerful but mentally handicapped to the point of being like a small child. George is his "protector"?
So much can be said about this short book. How can so much be packed into only 100 pages? At the farm they meet a cast of archetypal characters: the little man who flaunts his power, the powerless, the old, the outcast, the leader. George and Lenny have to navigate their way and find their place in this representation of society.
