If he had been with me is a emotional and sad book it is not SUPER coming of age but it does kind of talk about growing up
Looking for Alaska is one of my favorite reads that fits both categories you listed very well. John Green also just has a lot of good coming of age novels. How it Feels to Float is another sad coming of age novel.
