I have a hit-or-miss relationship with Lawrence. This one checked most of the boxes for me. Great characters, fantastic world building a fresh new take on Fantasy. However, there were events that I rolled my eyes at but just moved on, as the story was so engaging.

Two protagonists, Evar and Livira. Evar, a young man, has lived his entire life in a locked section of a library, the size of which is unknown but extensive. He wants to get out. Livira is a child at the beginning of the book. Her entire life has been "In The Dust", similar to a desert. She is taken to the city where the Library is located after her village is attacked and destroyed. She wants to get in.

How these two meet is such a twist, and those twists and turns continue throughout the story. So many moments when I just had to put the book down and re-think where I thought the story was going. However, like I said there were some eye-rolling moments and there were some sections that dragged too much for me. All in all though, a great Epic Fantasy that I am anxious to re-visit in book 2.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 1641 comments LOL I thought you were reviewing book 3 and I was about to spill / rant - well, I started typing and realised in time so I deleted a whole paragraph ha ha ha

Um, yes, his books are hit/miss for me too. I loved this first book and the first book of the trilogy prior to this (totally separate trilogies) but subsequent books were just sub par for me. I was telling another friend that I think I prefer his earlier works.

I hope you like the next 2 books better than me and I look forward for you to explain to me what's actually happening LOL

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12712 comments Oh geez, see that is the thing I dislike about him-Book 1 puts me spellbound, and then "meh". I was hoping this one would be like the Red Sister series, where I loved them all!
