The Debate Club discussion

The Debate Club is back up and running!! And with it, new responsibilities, roles, and requests. We’ve noticed requests for more conservative moderators, as well as a fact checker! We like both of these ideas, and therefore are reopening moderation requests!
Although we are looking for more conservative mods, if you are left leaning, we will still consider ALL applications and would love to hear from our debaters.

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐝: i would love to be of help in such an amazing little group run by a very good friend of mine, to have a side of each argument and keep both in mind, and peacefully resolve arguments, keeping people on topic, making sure everyone feels safe and included, etc.
𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬: i have a very non biased approach so i can hear everybody's version, i can be assertive while being peaceful which includes my ability to keep calm in harsh situations, and i also think that i could be very good at making sure everybody feels safe, even people who do not have the same political views as myself. (other reasons i cannot think of at this moment)

Three reasons why you wish to be a mod: Because I love debating. Because I'm taking debate. And because I'm also taking government, which I also love.
Three reasons why you feel you would be a better mod than others: I wouldn't say that I would be a better mod than others. Just that I applied when some others didn't.
A weakness that may affect your moderating: Uhhhh, well not really probably school so I'm mostly active in the mornings and like after three, but other than that, no.

Three reasons why you wish to be a mod: To make sure everybody is heard and people get to voice their opinions equally, so there's no bias, I love to debate and I wish to be more involved in this group
Three reasons why you feel you would be a better mod than others: I'm respectful even if we have differing views, I listen to both sides equally, I have an open mind so I'm willing to change my views based on evidence
A weakness that may affect your moderating: Even though I try to be respectful, if I'm very passionate on a subject and the debate is heated I might get a little frustrated but I still try my best to be calm and collected

Self Identification of Political Leaning: well im the most liberal of my family and the most conservative of my friends. im definitely more right than left though, but i genuinely love hearing different views
Three reasons why you wish to be a mod:
1. yall said yall needed more right leaning mods and im right leaning and love debating so here i am
2. i love sharing my opinions with others
3. i love hearing others opinions
Three reasons why you feel you would be a better mod than others:
1. i am known for staying very respectful during debates, and backing off when things get too heated (i debate in peoples comment sections sometimes if they are okay with debate, and ive had lots of people tell me that they love how i can stay calm and not resort to ad hominens)
2. Im a right leaning Christian, which doesnt make me better, but it does add more diversity to the moderators if thats what yall are looking for
3. i value logic and evidence over thoughtless emotion
A weakness that may affect your moderating: my activeness is really spotty. im busy with school and so the amount of time i will be able to spend helping with the group will vary each day. also sometimes i will get very anxious and mad when talking to people, and so i might step away from the conversation for a while, but i am usually able to stay respectful even when my emotions are running high, and over the years of me debating ive learned how to control my emotions more and not let what other say effect my interactions with them
Anything You Feel We Could Do Better On That You Could Assist With and How: yall are doing great! the only thing i can think of is sometimes there hasnt been a mod present in the debate room while someone is being rude or disrespectful and the people present have had to step in, but thats not yalls fault at all its just that yall are busy and cant moderate everything 24/7

1. I know how to de-escalate tense moments and make sure everyone feels heard, even when opinions clash.
2. As a queer Muslim, I bring a unique perspective on respect, boundaries, and inclusion. I understand how identity and belief shape dialogue, and I help create space for everyone to speak safely.
3. I show up prepared, keep track of discussions, and back up arguments with credible sources—always aiming for clarity, not just winning.

1. As a queer Muslim, I bring a unique lens to moderation—one that understands boundaries, belief systems, and the emotional weight behind certain topics. I know how to hold space for disagreement without letting it turn into harm.
2. I don’t just show up—I keep track of discussions, follow through on responsibilities, and back up arguments with credible evidence. I help keep debates focused, fair, and grounded in truth.
3. I know how to de-escalate tension, redirect conversations respectfully, and make sure quieter voices aren’t drowned out. I moderate with care, not control.
A weakness that may affect your moderating:
I care about people’s feelings and emotional safety, so when debates get tense or personal, I sometimes struggle to detach emotionally. I’m learning to balance compassion with clarity—making sure I protect the space without over-identifying with one side.

Anything You Feel We Could Do Better On That You Could Assist With and How:
Sometimes the loudest or most confident speakers dominate the space, and important perspectives get lost. I’m good at reading group dynamics and gently inviting others in. As a moderator, I’d make sure everyone has a chance to speak, especially those who might feel overlooked or hesitant.
