I’m uncertain how to rate this. I got lost early on, trying to keep the characters straight. In the middle of the night I went to the end to “see what happened,” ended up more confused than ever, and also recognized that this was not the kind of book where that is the most important issue. The next day I went to read reviews in the hope of finding just enough information about plot and character to get me on track; I ended up finding very strong opinions, both loving and hating this book. I returned to the book and skipped along, reading bits and pieces, finding that I agreed with both the 5 stars and the 1 star reviews. Yes, it seems like “misery porn” but there is some very good prose and the relationships described are wonderfully complex. In the end, this is not the time of my life for reading this book. I may come back to it later but for now, it’s a DNF.

It's refreshing to read a review about your attempts to read this book and how you decided to DNF it. I've waked this same path many times. There are so many good books out there. I hope you like your next book better.
This is a book you definitely have to be in the mood for and is emotionally wrecking. Tons of misery but the book also gives a perspective that different than the main experience, a chronic unhappiness and how it effects relationships and one's life. I respect not being in the frame of mind to read this book. I also understand how some would completely despise this book. I gave it 4 stars.
