Susan | 711 comments Today (April 26), in the US, is Independent Bookstore Day!

What is your favorite bookstore (independent or not)?

message 2: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (morr_books) | 116 comments I don't think I can name a favorite. I visit bookstores everywhere I travel. It is one of my favorite things to do. The bookstore in Porto, Portugal was very memorable. I would say that my local bookstore that I have visited a lot is called Lit BookBar (independent bookstore).

Jen Scott | 50 comments We had a new romance bookstore open in Salt Lake City last year called Lovebound Library, and I love it!

Sarah, I do the same! I'll keep the bookstore in Porto on my bucket list! When my family was visiting Victoria BC last year, we came across Munro Bookstore. It's one of the more beautiful bookstores I've experienced.

How fun, Jen! I love that there are many niche bookstores popping up.

For years I went to the Half Price Book Store. There the feel of was of it was of an independent bookstore. I spent many happy weekends visiting with books, with friends, with people at the coffeeshop.

Half Price? That's right up my alley! I agree that the experience of a bookstore is such an incredible feeling.

Yes bookstores are grand. I did not realize so much about them. I absolutely love love the documentary The Booksellers. Here is the official trailer: https://youtu.be/ymcRRt3Ix04?si=OR-4u...

Recently I read The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore about some independent booksellers.

Ohhh books about books!

Lamilla | 873 comments Lately I buy stuff mostly on marketplaces. There are two delivery points near my house, it is very convenient

Thanks Cynda! I will check out those resources.

We are fortunate to be able to source books easily! I read a sci-fi book today about climate change destroying the world. It took place in Vancouver and people were working to rescue books from the main library building that was falling apart. Pretty much my worst nightmare to be without books!

Ann A (readerann) | 909 comments My favorite is Powell's City of Books in Portland, OR - supposedly the largest independent bookstore in the world!

I don’t have one. I live in a small town and I can only visit bookstores when going to a big city, which doesn’t happen too often. Also, I live in Germany and only find books in English or Spanish in VERY big bookstores. So, my options are limited.

I order my books online.

In my dreams my favorite bookstore would have a big bed where I can read a bit of the books before buying them.

Vicki Willis | 598 comments I am sure there are some because I live in a city, but I don't know where they are.
I only use kindle or one of the free little libraries in my neighborhood if I want a physical book..

The favorite bookstore of my dreams includes cats. Some independent booksellers keep them for mousing, and book readers want them for beauty or friendliness.

Maybe we should meet again to visit all the stores in Stuttgart… 😏

I mostly read ebooks (Amazon) and listen to audiobooks (Audible). Trying to switch away from Amazon, so I got a local e-reader (Kobo equivalent) to be more independent and to be able to do my online purchases elsewhere. For audio I will try Everand and Storytel.

Physical books I buy locally at a familiy-owned medium-sized bookstore chain here in the south of Germany, called Osiander.
And I check out any bookstore I see when I travel.

If/when I travel to Germany, I will be sure to visit Osiander.

What was the book called?

Cathy (cathepsut) | 679 comments The description reminds me of All the Water in the World: A Novel. Not in Vancouver or with books though… 😝

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 32 comments I do like to shop at independent bookstores when I can, but Barnes & Noble and Half Price Books are the bookstores closest to home.
