Dan | 1744 comments Original title: Hop-Frog; Or, the Eight Chained Ourang-Outangs
Country: United States
Language: English
Genre(s): Horror
Format: Short story
Published in: The Flag of Our Union
Publisher: Frederick Gleason
Publication date: March 17, 1849

Synopsis: The title character, a person with dwarfism taken from his homeland, becomes the jester of a king particularly fond of practical jokes.

Critical analysis has suggested that Poe wrote the story as a form of literary revenge against a woman named Elizabeth F. Ellet and her circle.

I have never heard of this Poe story and have no idea what to expect. Should be fun!

Dan | 1744 comments That's where I read it from. I liked this tale the best of all the ones we have read so far. Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Mr. James | 26 comments It's a grim tale that's predictable but satisfying. The predictability is why I gave it 4 stars, otherwise -- for Poe -- it was a nice change of scenery.

Dave J. (ourpoisonwoodtrials) | 58 comments This one's pretty good, although I still prefer a lot of Poe's other stories. My prediction was that Hop-Frog was going to devise a way to get the king and his men imprisoned or trapped somewhere. Well, he did trap them, all right. But knowing Poe, I should've expected the gruesome turn of events.
