Melissa | 1939 comments Novels Around the World Mini

Experiencing other cultures and traveling vicariously through books - who hasn't done it? Who doesn't enjoy it? Except for maybe the fact that we can't taste the food via the books ;-)

We are going to feed this bookish travel enjoyment with this challenge where we want to take you on a literary itinerary. Or several.

Each team will create their own Book Travel Itinerary of 11 books, each set in a different country, written by an author born in the country, or a nonfiction book where events in the country are the primary subject of the book. No more than 6 books can be chosen from among a list of easier to find countries (easy). At least 3 books will have to be chosen from off the beaten track countries (midlevel), and at least 2 more books should be from challenging countries (hard).

Note your itinerary may use fewer easy countries and more midlevel or harder countries but each itinerary must have at least 3 midlevel and 2 hard countries. There is a tab in the team spreadsheet that provides a list of countries in each category. The reason on the spreadsheet should match exactly the spelling of the country provided in these lists.

Once one Book Travel Itinerary has been finished, the team can start on a new Book Travel Itinerary. Countries may only be duplicated once. If, for example, your team has read a book set in the UK for Itinerary 1 and for Itinerary 2, you will not be able to read a book set in the UK for Itinerary 3.

The next itinerary can only be started once the previous itinerary has been completely finished. Within the itinerary, you don't have to read books in order, meaning your first 11 books can be finished in any random order. But you cannot move onto your next itinerary if all books from the previous itinerary have not been finished.

◈ Each book read can only be used for one mini challenge.
◈ Each book read can only be used for one task.
◈ Each book read must be set for 50% or more in the selected country, verifiable that the author was born there, or clear that the country is the primary subject matter of the nonfiction book.
◈ Fantasy settings of real countries are allowed. Korea fantasy books or historic books where is it otherwise not clearly set in the north are defaulted to South Korea.
◈ Contemporary boundaries are to be used in determining which country a book takes place in and if it is not clear, save everyone the headache and use it for a different task. Please and thank you.
◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of Tower Teams XI (17th May 9am UTC).
◈ The usual book length rules apply.
◈ You will gain 5 points for each easy country, 10 points for each midlevel country, and 20 points for each hard country.
◈ One partial itinerary will be allowed

Deanna | 3568 comments Bienvenido team to Tower Teams XI!

I'm Deanna. I live in Virginia and am currently trying to finish homeschooling my youngest who is in 11th grade while working full time.

This is my 6th TT challenge, and I'm looking forward to a fun game with all of you. Please take time to read through the rules and ask any questions you have.

I love to read Fantasy, Science Fiction, Mystery, Romance, and Thriller; but also like to try other genres from time to time.

A few introductory questions for everyone:
🧭Have you discovered any new authors recently that you love?
Heather G. Harris - I discovered her book The Vampire and the Case of the Wayward Werewolf (The Portlock Paranormal Detective #1) by Heather G. Harris last summer during book games and am starting to work on some of her other series.

🧭What book are looking forward to reading during TTXI?
The Vampire and the Case of the Hellacious Hag (The Portlock Paranormal Detective #6) by Heather G. Harris

🧭If you could take all the works of 3 authors with you to a desert island, which authors would you choose?
J. D. Robb (love the In Death series)
Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels and the Innkeepers Chronicles are my favorites)
??? I have no idea - too many choices for the 3rd

My shelf: tower-xi

Can't wait to meet everyone and hopefully find some new books to love along the way!

🧭What book are looking forward to reading during TTXI?

🧭If you could take all the works of 3 authors with you to a desert island, which authors would you choose?
JK. Rowling, I know it may be polemic, but I love all her books, specially Harry Potter of course.
Edith Wharton, House of Mirth is one of my all time favorite books ever and I need to read all her books.
Agatha Christie, there are so many books by her, I'm sure I'd never get bored.

bookswithpaulette | 104 comments Hi Team,

Paulette here from Melbourne, Australia. Looking forward to playing TT again it's been a couple of years since Ive played. 🤞It will keep the reading momentum going after UNO for my annual GR reading target 🤣

Icono Tower huh? I had to look it up in Paraguay, the closest I have been to it is at the Triple Frontier at Iguazu Falls 🙃

I love a good thriller, crime/mystery book. The odd romance now and then but mainly stick to thriller, especially love the serial killers ones.... yep I know, I may have a problem!

❓Intro Questions
New Authors - Charlie Donlea enjoyed Twenty Years Later

Next reads - Im hoping to read at least 5 books from my bookshelf that have been waiting for years TBR

3 authors works to Island: Karin Slaughter and Kristin Hannah (Author) then probably an author that specialises in deserted Island survival so I have some tips and tricks to learn how to get my butt out of there

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1463 comments Hi Team!
I'm MelanieJoy or Melanie (or Mel) and I live in Northern California with my husband, 1 1/2yr old son, and 2 cats. I'm expecting another baby in August :). This will be my 3rd official Tower Teams. The first two were 2017 and 2018 and I did last year's Book Games. (I also did the infamous WOBBLE in 2016 which was my first team reading challenge ever).

Mostly I've currently been reading closed door romance and some fantasy. I also enjoy some literary fiction and best sellers as well as Christian books and some mysteries and thrillers (light preferred).

A new to me author this year is Sarah Adams. I've loved her closed door romances.

A book I'm excited to read for TT is The Unbound Empire (Swords and Fire, #3) by Melissa Caruso . I also might finally read Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1) by Rebecca Yarros because I got it from the library.

message 21: by Alaina (new)

Alaina (ameserole) | 346 comments

Hello everyone!

I'm Alaina and I also live in Virginia (somewhere in NOVA to be exact). I'm in two departments at my job: project management and order operations. All I seem to do nowadays is work, clean, and read. I one hundred percent need to take a vacation or staycation but who knows when that will happen?

Audiobooks give me life and a break from the chaos at work. It pains me so much when I have to press pause so that I can answer a phone call or go to a meeting. I also love reading physical books and ebooks but audios are just way easier when you are staring at multiple screens.

I believe this is my second TT challenge... and the last time was in 2022? I think? I took a break from challenges because life just kept getting more chaotic. Being in two departments, plus real life, will do that to you. So, let's see how this will go. . .

As for genres, I guess you could say my favorite would be romantasy but honestly, I love switching it up. I'm all over the place and love reading/learning.

🧭Have you discovered any new authors recently that you love?
I have a lot of ARCs so I dive into new authors from time to time. This year, I got a whole series, Blood of a Fae, by Briar Boleyn and enjoyed all four books. I also enjoyed Katy Brent, Nataly Gruender, Mai Sennaar, Camryn Garrett, Lee Hawkins, and I could go on and on.

🧭What book are you looking forward to reading during TTXI?
Can I say all of them? I'm not much of a planner anymore and will pretty much read anything.

🧭If you could take all the works of 3 authors with you to a desert island, which authors would you choose?
Suzanne Collins... because obviously we are trauma bonding.
Brandon Sanderson... because the wait for his books at my library is ridiculously long and it's been 84 years since I requested The Way of Kings.
James Patterson... honestly this spot was pretty hard to pick, but I think it's time I stop ghosting his series. Being on an island, I feel like I will have plenty of time to finish them and then some.

Alyana | 1086 comments Hey everyone! I’m Alyana from Queens, NY. I work at the library, so books are basically my whole world—especially psychothrillers, mysteries, romance, and contemporary fiction. Sci-fi and fantasy aren't really my thing, but I’m always open to a good story. I just finished playing UNO with Paulette (awesome captain btw 😉) Melissa, how cool that we're playing on a same team again?

This is my 5th time playing Tower Teams, and I’m super excited to be back with all of you! Looking forward to some fun (and maybe a little friendly competition)!

🧭Have you discovered any new authors recently that you love?
Corinne Michaels - I've recently fallen in love with the works of author Corinne Michaels. Her book "You Loved Me Once" caught my attention during a recent read and I've added a few more of her titles to my to-read list.

🧭What book are looking forward to reading during TTXI?
Great Big Beautiful Life - Emily Henry is a favorite author of mine - her writing always leaves me eager for more.

🧭If you could take all the works of 3 authors with you to a desert island, which authors would you choose?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I'd choose to take the works of Emily Henry, Abby Jimenez, and Aly Martinez with me. Their stories have a way of captivating me and transporting me to new worlds.

Melissa | 1939 comments Hello! I am Melissa - I am from Vermont, USA. I am a middle school teacher, so I usually have one middle grades book going during the school year. My favorite genre is non-fiction, which I never would have thought would be the case. I really like biographies and memoirs and anything about nature. I love fiction too, and read pretty much anything - but I gravitate towards historical fiction, science fiction, police procedurals, and books from other countries.

Yes, Alyana! We will have to figure out which book fits both of our challenges :)

It is really nice to see familiar faces on our team, as well as people I have yet to get to know :)

This is my 3rd TT. I am a co-captain, and am very glad Deanna is taking the lead! I will lead us in the Novels Around the World mini.

🧭Have you discovered any new authors recently that you love?
I've been jumping around a lot to different memoirs lately. I would read anything by Lisa See, Kristin Hannah, Andy Weir, Carl Hiaasen, and Charlotte McConaghy though.

🧭What book are looking forward to reading during TTXI?
Maybe I'll try to read a really long Brandon Sanderson book! I also want to re-read Dune because I just watched the second movie, and I liked the movie better than the book (isn't that terrible!)

🧭If you could take all the works of 3 authors with you to a desert island, which authors would you choose?
Hmmmmm....
Brandon Sanderson because he's written so much and I liked Mistborn a lot.
Robin Wall Kimmerer - she's so amazing at writing about the natural world
Louise Penny - because I really need to get back to her Inspector Gamache series!

Jhmingos | 765 comments Hi everyone! Just finished Uno, and I'm excited to have my 4th year with TT. I also did Book Games last year, but never had the pleasure of doing Wobble. I've heard a lot about it, though, so I'm curious what happened 👀. I live in Southern California, where I work in research. You can call me Jhmingos or Lizzie. Either one is fine.

Lately, I've been reading a lot of romance and literary fict, but I usually have to read a mix of genres to stay out of a reading rut.

🧭Have you discovered any new authors recently that you love?
I've been getting into Percival Everett and C.G. Drews. C.G. Drews is a YA author, but the writing is lyrical, and I'm curious to read more.

🧭What book are looking forward to reading during TTXI?
I've really been in the mood for an epic historical fiction like the Kingsbridge series, but I've been saving it for team challenges. So I'm super excited to get started on one. I actually have Cathedral of the Sea on hold, which is set in Spain and has a cathedral on the cover.

🧭If you could take all the works of 3 authors with you to a desert island, which authors would you choose?
It would have to be the prolific authors like Agatha Christie, Terry Pratchett, and John Irving (this one is kind of random but sometimes I'm in the mood for something literary).

I love to read mystery and historical mystery, fantasy, mythology, science fiction, thriller and non-fiction. I like to read books in English, French and Dutch.

Have you discovered any new authors recently that you love?
-- The mystery series set in Inishowen by Andrea Carter. I've read the first 2, Death at Whitewater Church and Treacherous Strand
-- The Oxford Murders by Guillermo Martínez, a mathematical mystery by and for mathematicians - such fun! Translated from Spanish. Would read the next volume, but not available in English - yet.
-- The very different Wayward Children fantasy series by Seanan McGuire. I've read the first 2, Every Heart a Doorway and Down Among the Sticks and Bones
Other fun authors in various genres recently discovered: Lorenzo Carcaterra, Nnedi Okorafor, Amy Tector, Toni Coppers, Eva Jurczyk, Todd Charles, Charlie M. Holmberg, Naomi Hirahara.

What book are looking forward to reading during TTXI?
The BOM book for May, What the River Knows

If you could take all the works of 3 authors with you to a desert island, which authors would you choose?
Nearly impossible to decide! It would have to be authors with a long list of publications, and/or hefty volumes. Would consider Agatha Christie, Brandon Sanderson, Alexander McCall Smith, Charles Todd, Georges Simenon, Fred Vargas, Tony and Anne Hillerman, Elizabeth Peters, J. A. Jance, ...

I actually have a book set in Yemen on my list for a hard country, though it's not super long. I also can read something by Nalini Singh, who was born in Fiji.

I'll see about about some of the others.

There are plenty of tasks in the 2nd and 3rd minis that we can use the fantasy books for. Even if we can't find a place for a book in the mini it still earns page points.

Great! I like sharing what we enjoyed reading.

I just realized that The Poisonwood Bible is set in Congo. And Jesse Q. Sutanto who wrote Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers series was born in Indonesia.

If you like Harry Potter, I also recommend Akata Witch, which has gotten a lot of comparisons. It's set in Nigeria.

Alyana | 1086 comments I think I might have one for the Philippines (my birth country). Also, we can start any BOM anytime after has the challenge started, right?

Deanna | 3568 comments Hey team. The tasks listed for mini 2 on the tracking spreadsheet were incorrect. I've fixed the tasks now. Please check to see if your books fit any of the corrected tasks when you have a chance.

Reminder regarding mini 3. We can only work on 2 countries at a time, and we cannot bank books for future countries. You only need to list task options for whatever countries are open when your book is completed. Hopefully this makes listing options easier.
