I did not like the protagonist, therefore the premise of the story. I was given this as a present when it was high in the charts. I wondered why it was so popular? Any idea?

The premise is that she is an unreliable witness, but also the only witness. Do you have to like her to want the killer found? I don't think so. It's not as if she's making more trouble or getting other people killed. A lot of books are written from the perspective of the killer. Do you need to like the killer? Is it bad if you do like them?
I like that her flaws are out in the open. She has a drinking problem. She still in love with her ex. She obsesses over people she doesn't know. But you can see that she was hurt. You can see her start trying again. You find out she was manipulated. And without all her unemployed nosiness, no one would know who the killer was.

I can understand why you say that, it is like when in a TV show, you hate the main character from the begining, because of no aparent reason whatsoever, right? :) But I think the true protagonist is not Rachel, is the story itself, with its twists
