This is the Debate Topic Requests topic. Request a debate you do not
see already in existence, but please note that we are not mindlessly
accepting every requested topic. As stated many times around the group
for absolute clarity, human rights and a person’s existence are not things
we are allowing to be brought up as a debate. We have topics to discuss
those as questions and answers, not arguments.

For example:

“How do abortion laws impact public health and healthcare access?” A good debate
does not bring bodily autonomy into question.

“Should LGBTQ+ people have the right to get married?” No, we will not be debating
a person’s right to wed and be who they are without threat of persecution.

We can have debates that relate to those hard-hitting issues as long as we are not
debating someone’s right to exist. Choose your wording and intent very carefully.

I don't know how to word it as a question, but maybe we could debate like the best candy or maybe the best color of Skittles (like we are in lux rn)?

can I suggest a change to the counting game? instead of everyone counting up, the moderators should be -5 and everyone else +1, and if the number is in the negatives the mods are winning and if it’s positive then the rest of us are winning?

Tessie | 82 comments I was wondering if we could have a theology folder? It’s my favorite debate lol, for topics like whether god is real, accuracy between the Bible or the Quran, whether religion can be useful for scientific or biological facts, or just moral judgment? Things like that? Oh maybe some astrophysical topics like the first cells and etc

i think the reason we don't have one is because those discussions stray more towards personal belief and faith, as compared to the societal discussions this group is geared towards, so questions like 'is god real' may not be a sort of topic we'd discuss since that is a personal belief differing person to person, versus something like 'does religion have a place in our government/education system?' might be a better discussion

There’s evidence for and against god. You could argue the factuality behind God or against god. God is very impersonal to me and has nothing to do with faith or belief, just evidence.
Isn’t debate about what people believe and why? Yes factual evidence should be included but if there are no opinions or beliefs there is nothing to debate.
Also I like that idea of religion having a place in the education system.what about the effect theology has on our brain, if it’s detrimental or helpful, or the astrophysics topic?

while i agree with many of your points, i do want to point out that you said god is completely impersonal to you, however what makes you believe that it's the same for everyone? religion is very personal for me, it's very personal to many people, and by god which god are you referring to? allah, brahman, yahweh etc? it's a very broad and very personal topic. if you wanted to perhaps have an informational topic on proof of the existence of a higher being, that is a different discussion which you should specify.

secondly, while i understand that the ideas you could definitely be good ideas for debates in general, i am restating that i do not believe they fit very well into what this group specifically is geared towards. there are multiple other debate groups on goodreads and various other online forums if that is what you are looking for, but it's important to recognize that those topics are not the targeted discussions here, where it has been restated various times that the primary goal is to provide information and educate, personal beliefs are not something to educate people on.

and finally, those were just my thoughts on your question, i am not a moderator and so my words have no say in their final decision. for things like the first cells, what exactly are you looking for in a discussion surrounding that? clarifying the exact wording of your statement rather than throwing ideas out there might help you

we will not be debating theology in this group. we are here to inform on how some of the more contentious political topics actually impact people and exist within policy (the key word being policy). theology is something that is a deeply held personal conviction that can be unique between each and every person, and it has no place in a group like this because each person's faith is valid and has no place to be questioned like that. i would even say an informational topic on proof would be stepping too far into theology

I didn’t realize it was a strictly political debate place, that’s my bad, I didn’t mean to offend yall if I pushed too hard, it was just a thought.

no offense here at all, just trying to be clear with why that's such a hard no. thanks for being understanding!

too many debate groups have died due to drama over theology based discussions, we aren’t having that :)

Tessie | 82 comments I’m sorry yall I’m gonna bother ya with a question. Could we possibly have a ‘How does the poor treatment of mass produced animals/meat affect our health?’
If it can’t be worded like this that’s alright but something like that?

Nimbus | 38 comments Could we have a debate on if CRISPR is ethical to use on fetuses? Or just anything on CRISPR. I've just learned about this topic from a friend and it's super interesting.

im looking into this now (had a lull in tasks) and how would you feel about a debate on the ethics of crispr in general? i just saw something about using it to take out mosquitos and while i had heard of designer babies before, i had never considered the ecological impact and i think that's absolutely fascinating

message 21: by Nimbus (new)

Nimbus | 38 comments Sounds good! Thanks so much again; and yeah, I hadn't really considered the ecological impact it could have either. It really is fascinating!
