Another new narrator for this long running historical series. I’ll always miss Davina Porter, but I think I can live with Tom Kiteley. I’m committed to the characters in this series after reading and/or listening to all twenty of the books so far.

There’s a predictable formula after so many books, but as always, the historical content held my attention. This book is set in August of 1816 in the grim aftermath of the end of the Napoleonic War. The atypical and disastrous climate change of the ‘year without summer’ and the influx of so many unemployed ex-sailors and soldiers creates a volatile political climate. Once again Sebastian St. Cyr must solve the mystery of a gruesome murder before an innocent man is hanged.

I could see the political and social parallels to the current century. I don’t think that was accidental. I enjoyed the author’s foreshadowing of the coming formation of England’s organized police system.
