Emi Porter | 93 comments Found a word in a book you were reading that you had to look up?
Share it with us! Here’s how:

Post the word – spell it out clearly.

Tell us what it means – include a brief definition.

Optional: Add context – share the sentence or book it came from, or use it in your own sentence.

Let’s help each other grow our vocabulary, one curious word at a time!

Example:

I was reading "Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones" and the word WANTONESS I was like... What is this word??
Looked it up and it means:
sexually unrestrained or having many casual sexual relationships (typically used of a woman) - similar word: promiscuous

This word was used WAAAYYY too many times in this book

Book_Whisp | 4 comments The word is thalassophobia , I do not remember where I read this word, pretty sure it was one of the stepbrother trope books I have read, maybe it was Little Starnger by Rivers, Leigh.

Thalassophobia means the fear of large bodies of water, characterized by an excessive and persistent fear of deep, dark, and large bodies of water like oceans, seas, or lakes.

Was reading a poem today from Mary Oliver...came across the word Palavering.

It means to talk unproductively and at length.

Excerpt from the poem reads "through the trees there is the sound of the wind, palavering"

An example from me? My four boys never seen to stop palavering! 😆

I'd heard of the word Wantoness but couldn't remember the meaning. As for Thalassophobia? That's a new one! Yay for growing our vocabulary 😃

I like this discussion so I'll keep adding...

I came across the word assiduously. It means - great care and perseverance.

Excerpt from Braiding Sweetgrass 'In a climate where winter lasts six months, we always search assiduously for signs of spring'

Emi Porter | 93 comments for a 5yr old - its an amazing word that we keep using when we don't get something first time round... I love that he uses it and reminds me to use it when I'm getting frustrated.

Sam A. | 51 comments I'm currently reading The Fisherman King by Kathrina Mohd Daud
and learned the word 'temerity', which is basically a synonym to audacity.

"She has the temerity to laugh as she watches him"
