Celebrating the ocean day…1. Read a book that includes travel by ship.
“I joined the Mortzestus in ’Frisco. I heard before I signed on, that there were some funny yarns floating round about her; but I was pretty nearly on the beach, and too jolly anxious to get away, to worry about trifles.”
William Hope Hodgson - The Ghost Pirates 1909
2. Read a book set on or beside a river.
“In these times of ours, though concerning the exact year there is no need to be precise, a boat of dirty and disreputable appearance, with two figures in it, floated on the Thames, between Southwark Bridge which is of iron, and London Bridge which is of stone, as an autumn evening was closing in.”
Charles Dickens - Our Mutual Friend 1865

I will use this month's theme for a reread. I rarely reread but Siddhartha by Herman Hesse is one of my absolute top favourite books and I've read it three times I believe but now it's well more than 20 or 25 years since the last reread so it's about time!

Thanks,Trisha,I'm becoming quite interested in short stories and am very impressed with this writer who can conjure up lots of atmosphere!Thankyou for all the hard work you put into these challenges-they always introduce me to a new author or genre!
Thanks, Vicky. You always choose interesting books for the challenges. I learn a lot from you & other members who often choose books I don’t know. It’s lovely to get recommendations. I used not to enjoy short stories, but like them now & find them a useful introduction to authors I don’t know about.

I have started reading Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener. I am considering this book a short story anthology. It is actually a series of historical fiction short stories that are tenuously related and placed in chronological order. I'm not sure I'll finish it in one month.
☑ 1. The South Pacific
☑ 2. Coral Sea
3. Mutiny
4. An Officer and a Gentleman
5. The Cave
6. The Milk Run
7. Alligator
8. Our Heroine

19. A Cemetery at Hoga Point
18. The Landing on Kuralei
17. Frisco
16. The Strike
15. Those Who Fratenize
14. The Airstrip at Konora
13. Wine for the Mess at Segi
12. A Boar's Tooth
11. Passion
Lynn, you only need one short story for the challenge. Your book seems interesting - read as much as you want, but don’t worry about finishing the whole book this month.

Well done to everyone who took part in this & gave such interesting & varied book recommendations. You all did better than me - this was just one of several challenges I failed to complete in June.Update - I did the challenge but hadn’t realised - oops!
I haven't been able to participate in the monthly challenge due to my work schedule. Turns out I read a book in June that fits this prompt - To Love and Be Wise by Josephine Tey.

This is very funny - I’m laughing at myself. For some reason I read the same book very early in the month, finishing it on 5 June. It’s only your comment that made me check. I find most of Josephine Tey’s books instantly forgettable & hadn’t noticed it worked for our June challenge. I had hoped to read a book by Joseph Conrad or Mark Twain but ran out of time. Now to update my challenge…

As usual, you can complete this monthly task by reading just one short story or as many books as you want! Read something you will enjoy & perhaps recommend your choice to others in the group.
Suggestions:
Fiction or non-fiction. There are lots of possibilities. Some may enjoy a book by Mark Twain or Joseph Conrad. Fun reads suitable for this theme include The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame & Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome.
