Have you read the graphic novel for "The Walking Dead"?

I Am Legend. The creatures are classed as vampires and have many of the same weaknesses, but they act more like modern zombies, and it was a direct inspiration for Romero's Night of the Living Dead, so it could be argued that I Am Legend is the point of genesis for zombies in modern fiction.

What I love about the book, too, is that it has a purely scientific take on things. There are zero supernatural elements, and it can be really creepy and grim in all the right ways.
