I, Lafayette is narrative non-fiction in the form of an autobiography. Factual, detailed, often dramatic, Lafayette's conversations, thoughts and actions are always referenced from original sources. Lafayette recounts his life, tracing his path through the American War of Independence, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic years and the Restoration. A French aristocrat, he sailed to the fledgling United States and became a general in the Continental Army. He saw Washington as his adopted father and the United States as his adopted country. He continued to espouse the cause of liberty for the rest of his life.
