OK, so I was a bad girl and while I said July 3rd through July 9th at approx. 54 pages a day, I did not actually make a schedule by chapter. So here goes my attempt....July 3rd Ch. 1-4
July 4th Ch. 5-8
July 5th Ch. 9-12
July 6th Ch. 13-16
July 7th Ch. 17-20
July 8th Ch. 21-24
July 9th Ch. 25-27/end
Aah perfect, thank you! I'm going to try and get into it tonight, yesterday I wanted to read about five chapters but I was sick. If not, I'll catch up this weekend :)
I'm up to chapter 9 now, and these are my thoughts to that point. I am really finding the twists/variations of the "one bed" trope interesting - only one horse, only one room (but with seven beds piled up on each other in a small room), etc. Definitely the forced proximity trope is being thoroughly explored. The humor is on point, too ("just a muscle spasm", the constant misusage/mistranslation of French by Beth). I'm also really liking the strikethroughs with things she really means under but then replacing it with what is "supposed" to be her reaction. I do NOT like Mrs. Quirm so far; her rivalry with Mr. Oberhufter has not been entertaining.
And those three gentlemen (Fettick, Flogg and Badeau) that are instigating this whole situation/contest; I'm dying to know how their machinations will work and what their true endgame is.
Up through chapter 16 now.I really am enjoying the humor in this. The milkman scene had me in stitches with all the dairy punny quips. And has anyone else noticed the misspellings/pronunciations of ornithology (orthology, ornlithology, etc.) everywhere? I know it is intentional (otherwise it would drive me bonkers), so it just adds to the humor.
Hope you're feeling better, @Heloise!
@Leslie still sick but feeling a little better, thanks for checking! I coudn't read this week-end unfortunately, I thought I would be better by then but I was out of energy. I'm going to try and catch up gradually so I can discuss it :)
chapters 1-5I've already read a few chapters. It took me a while to get into the first chapter, but then I devoured the next four.
I'm struggling a lot with Hippolyta but I suppose that's on purpose.
On the other hand, I'm under the spell of Devon and Beth and her internal dialogue of "what a cockroach! A handsome cockroach tho".
I love the looks they give each other, the charm they seem to be under when the other is close by... And it's historical fiction? What a delight!
I wasn't expecting this tone for the novel at all, but I'm a fan in the end because it doesn't detract from the tension between the characters. It's a change and a breath of fresh air.
chapters 6-12I'm having so much fun, I wish I could read all day long.
The scene in the bedroom was quite funny (what do you mean, seven beds?) but everything remains fairly soft, even if there were now two kisses between Devon and Beth. In fact, I find Beth's behavior slightly repetitive, in that she still thinks Devon's a cad when literally, he's trying to stay with her the whole time. It's time to take responsibility and stick to him like a mussel to its rock.
I've just met Gabriel, Devon's cousin, and as soon as I read "geographer", I knew he'd be the hero of book 2.
until the endWell @Ela that's too bad but I personally loved it ! It's a change from the classic historical fiction I've read so far.
I was afraid I was in for a case of ‘the cover is gorgeous but the story is going to suck’ but not at all.
My review for more thoughts and quotes : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I agree @Heloise, I really liked the story too! I think it was the humor that kept me going as well as the action. Definitely a closed door on the romance part of it, and the fantasy part left me with a more "cozy" vibe than with other romantasy books. As there was a preview in my book for the next book, I definitely want to read that book too.
