If this book wasn't for a book club read, I am not sure I would have finished it. I am giving it three stars because I did finish it. While I won't recommend it, and if anyone were to ask me, I would say it's not one I will ever reread, I also would not tell someone not to read it. I didn't love all the themes in the book. It made the book feel loaded. I also understand that I am not necessarily the target audience.
Cyrus, Zee, and Orkeide were all interesting characters. The relationship of Cyrus and his dad was probably typical for a boy being raised just by a dad.
The Death-Speak exhibition was a good addition to the story. Orkeida had lived thru a lot. She was there to listen. She was there to show what life could be.
Zee was the embodiment of a good friend. He was up for anything and was an incredible support to Cyrus.
If i understood the end, I was caught by surprise. One "twist" didn't surprise me. I had called part of it very early on.
I am still not sure why this book is a best seller, but it certainly was out of my normal reading.
Good review, Tiffany. I echo similar sentiments. The ending didn't land with me, but there's quite a bit in the writing I appreciate.Probably biggest issue I had was after finishing the book, I tried to imagine Cyrus 1 year, 5 years, 10 years later...and I just didn't see him a better place or with the sense of peace he was chasing.

Pat, I need to reflect on your musing about his future. I had not thought about the book that way. Books and movies that end in this way with a hole feel unfinished. I would have hope for a wrap up but perhaps this author prefers to leave the future to our own imaginations. It was a heavy book for me!
I'm glad I read this one...but not one of my favorites.
I think you need to be in the right mindset---and looking for this type of read to really enjoy it.

Like all literature from that side of the world—and that country in particular—it requires a minimum effort to understand for Western minds like ours. For me, the central axis of the novel is the real-life abusive episode of a downed passenger plane—without any consequences for the perpetrator—that changes the lives of the protagonist Iranian family.
The plot is narrated from different voices and different places and times, but it ends up assembling the pieces of a puzzle that fits together perfectly. This story of absences, addictions, forbidden loves, unhappy lives, and surprising reunions shows two realities as distant as they are close, because the backpack of the horrors we've experienced always accompanies us, and it's useless to escape.
Harsh, but hopeful, it has something incredibly important: it celebrates art—in all its expressions—as a healer of souls.

Cyrus searched for meaning in a chaotic world—how did it land for you?
Now’s the time to unpack it all: the language, the layers, the questions it raised (and maybe didn’t answer).
