Is technology making us less social and impacting our ability to engage in deep reading?

•~Brooke~• | 24 comments personally, i think it makes us less social in the sense of outside interaction. i mean, it makes it easier to talk to people, but ive found that sometimes id rather sit and watch youtube or play a game instead of calling a friend or going out with them. but at the same time, it makes it easier to find new friends and make plans. i can see both sides of the coin. as for reading, no i don’t think so. at least not for people who really enjoy reading. if a book is really good, i don’t even think about technology. i become so immersed that i lose track of time. it might make it a bit harder to actually pick up a book, but i don’t think it makes much of a difference (at least not for me)!

I completely agree! There's a quote somewhere that says, "Technology is a double-edged sword." I feel like that quote perfectly describes the cons and benefits of tech. I also think a lot of people prefer technology over reading (except for us avid readers), which can ofc be a problem. I really think technology can help people connect in so many ways (a lot of people find books through technology). Technically, this book group is only possible because of technology, so I can definitely see that there are benefits of tech to our reading.

Kendall v Mead I think in some ways yes and some ways no. Technology has made it a lot easier to meet new people and engage with others who don’t live near you but I do think that technology has impacted the way we interact with those who live close to us. Sometimes it’s easier to check in with a friend over text and stay updated in peoples lives that way but, in my opinion, nothing beats grabbing a cup of coffee together and having that face to face interaction. In terms of reading I do think technology has made it hard to immerse yourself in reading. I see all the time that people sit down to read and then end up scrolling for hours instead. Or when they’re reading constantly posting updates on their thoughts in the book and that, to me, doesn’t feel as immersive as reading without technology.
