Should parents have the right to determine what books are available in school libraries for all students?

i feel like to a degree they should, but it shouldn’t be dictated by an individual parent. like, if one parent said Better than the Movies shouldn’t be allowed, it isn’t automaticity removed, rather it goes through a vote of some sort among other parents. also, i feel like for high school this shouldn’t be the case. i could see wanting to monitor what goes into an elementary and even middle school library (i remember finding colleen hoover books in my middle school library—) but most highschoolers are mature enough to pick wisely. if a parent wants to remove a book from a library they should give a valid reason why. if they want to add one, same thing. why this book? however, i feel like the students should also have some say in it. imagine your favorite book getting removed because “it’s too mature” meanwhile it’s something like To Kill a Mockingbird or something. hope that makes sense—

No. There should be obviously some set guidelines, but parent your own child. You don't get to parent everyone else's. There are schools that are banning books just because one parent complains right now. Banning books is always wrong. They are pulling things like Ann Frank. Anything that talks about slavery in a negative light. Anything with evolution. Anything they don't like at all. If you want a Christian education, go to private school.

yeah i kinda agree. i don’t think it’s right doing it when one or two people complain, especially with books that provide important insight into certain topics (such as Ann Frank). i still feel like parents should have a say in what is in the library though. i mean, i wouldn’t want my child going to the school library and picking a book up, only for it to be something like smut. (that’s why i specifically called out elementary and middle school libraries, not necessarily highschool). but parents don’t always get to see what their kids pick out at the library, how can they parent their kid when the kid doesn’t have to show them the book they picked? idk just a thought :P

I don’t think parents should necessarily have a say but I do think they should be able to voice concerns if they have any. Perhaps once they voice a concern then that book gets reviewed by the librarian, principal, etc. And it can be determined if that book is age appropriate. I also think libraries, specifically elementary and middle school librairies, should do a better job of ensuring the library only has age appropriate books and that students should only be able to check those out. Outside libraries do exist and it’s a lot easier for parents to monitor what gets checked out at outside libraries so there’s not really a reason for schools to carry books that are primarily smut - which I know is a concern for many parents.

No because there goes some of the books that are interesting or will teach you something they are pulling already and the one's that are strict totally should not be allowed it's not fair to others if certain parents get to pick out their favorite book
