If I were Nikki, I wouldn't have said a word to her except "no comment". I wouldn't talk to her because you know whatever was said would be in her next news report.
Nikki wanted to leave it at No Comment, but Caitlin kept baiting her. I think the more time went on and the protestors and reconnecting with people from her past all combined to drive her more & more to think about the past, she lost patience a little & responded more than she would have otherwise.
She should have said "no comment" and walked away, but Cailin knew her triggers, and Nikki couldn't hold back, which gave Caitlin ammunition to bait her more.
It was like Nikki couldn't help herself from engaging. Maybe she was just as curious about Caitlin (and her info) as Caitlin was about Nikki.
I was a bit surprised that an FBI agent wouldn't stick to no comment. Perhaps she thought Caitlin would slip up and provide her with info as well.
Nikki did engage with her too much; it doesn't make sense that a seasoned FBI agent, who is a behavioral scientist and leads her own team, would allow this reporter to get under her skin. Its inconsistent with the characterization. I made a comment in a different thread that this is a repeated trope in Bookature books - female detective and female reporter who are initially at odds end up helping each other. Angela Marsons and Lisa Regan do this more successfully than Green..
Lauren, Marsons masters this theme as Kim only engages when either made to or Frost gives her something.
It felt off to me as well. I never could square it with who Nikki is and that professional background.

I agree with you, Jonetta. Masters handles this better.
I agree with both of you. I thought it was because she was home with old memories that triggered her response. Have you read Marsons latest book?
