This challenge is all about things found in mystery books ☺ Simply read books which match the descriptions below to earn bonus points.
DESCRIPTIONS:
★ Alibi - A book which you've buddy read.
★ Assassin - A book with the letter 'A' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Blackmail - A book with the letter 'B' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Clue - A book which is part of a series.
★ Death - A book tagged 'death' - https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
★ Evidence - A book with the letter 'E' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Family Secret - A book published before 1990.
★ Killer - A book with the letter 'K' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Leverage - A book with the letter 'L' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Locked Room - A book with 'H' in the title/series name/author name (for 'How?')
★ Meddling kids - A book tagged 'Children's' or 'Middle Grade'.
★ Missing person - A book which does not have an 'I' anywhere in the title/series name/author name.
★ Mistaken Identity - A book written using a pseudonym.
★ Murder - A book with the letter 'M' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Mystery Twin - A book which has editions with different titles.
★ Needle in a Haystack - A book with fewer than 1000 ratings.
★ New Lead - A book published in 2020 or later.
★ Poison - A book with the letter 'P' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Red Herring - A book which has clothing on the cover.
★ Serial Killer - A book with more than 500 pages.
★ Skeletons in the closet - A book tagged 'Historical'.
★ Suicide? - A book which is a standalone.
★ Suspect - A book with the letter 'S' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Theft - A book with the letter 'T' in the title/series name/author name.
★ Unmasking - A book which has at least one face on the cover.
★ Weapon - A book with an average rating of 4 or higher.
★ Will - A book tagged 'Adult'.
★ Witness - A book with the letter 'W' in the title/series name/author name.
--- Further guidelines:
- Books must be started and finished in August to earn bonus points.
- You will only receive bonus points once, no matter how many descriptions your book matches.
- Bonus points will be given to the same value as page points.
- Alternate titles must be made up of English letters, although we will accept titles with accents over words such as á, é, í, ó, ú.
- Numbers in titles can be used, but are spelled out, so '1001' would be 'one zero zero one', '20' would be 'two zero'.
- For this challenge you may use words which occur after punctuation in a title, including after a colon ':'
- You may also use author's names, or the names of any editors, translators, narrators or illustrators. Please link to the edition you wish to use.
- Minimum page counts for claiming bonus points are the same as minimum page counts for page points (see points below)
- You may add together page counts to reach these minimums, but you can only add together page counts of books which are under the minimum. These should be posted together.
- You may use one edition for page count, and another edition to complete a description.
- Books started before August can be used for page points +/- buddy read points, but you will not be able to claim any bonus points.
- Books can be used which don't fit the descriptions, you just won't earn any bonus points.

- The Short Version -Points:
* Points will only be given for pages read in August 2025.
Types of Books + Page Counts + Points:
* The minimum page counts for points are:
~ Adult/YA without illustrations = 50 pages
~ Middle-grade/children's books without illustrations = 75 pages
~ Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse = 150 pages
* Books may be added together to reach these minimums, as long as all books are under the minimum.
Reviews:
* A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.
* One book per comment on the review thread (unless adding books together).
* Maximum of 10 reviews per person in a day.
Re-Reads / Starting Again:
* Re-reads are allowed in this challenge.
Buddy Reads:
* Buddy reads must take place within this group to gain buddy read points.
* You must make at least 4 comments, including a reply to a buddy if possible.
* You may start up to 7 days before the start date, and 14 days after.
* August GBRs also count.
Start Times:
* This challenge will begin and end on Goodreads time (PST) - 00:01 on August 1st 2025 PST, to 00:01 on September 1st 2025 PST.

★ YA/Adult Books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 50 pages*

★ Buddy reads MATCH your points score for pages, so a 300-page book (6pts) + buddy read (6pts) = 12 points.

(Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in this group.)
★ If books are long enough to count on their own (50/75/150 pages) they will be scored on their own.
★ Individual Bonus Points will be awarded to individuals based on completing descriptions, and will match page points.
Hermione bonus points can be earned on books over 600 pages long, because Hermione loves a big book, and we love Hermione ❤️
Over 600 pages unillustrated book = 12 points
Over 600 pages unillustrated childrens/middle-grade book = 8 points
Over 600 pages illustrated/poetry etc. = 4 points

This challenge will be a team challenge. We will have a small number of teams, with a mixture of readers in each. When signing up please let us know whether you would like to be on a team, or whether you would like to go solo ☺
Teams should be posted by late July. If you sign up after teams are posted, we will try to add you to a team, but we may not always be able to. You may be asked to join a waiting list. Please sign up as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

This will be a team reading challenge which will run from August 1st to August 31st 2025. Results will be announced on September 1st 2025.

To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points for reading books which fit the descriptions below.
You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺
