Thinking about England’s queer histories, I’d be more likely to go with Pearl Alcock or Michael Dillon or Derek Jarman or Yvonne Taylor of Sistermatic or Mark Ashton or even Russell T. Davies... I'm sure too others would have different lists. As would I, if I were German or French...
Bowie can be controversial here for some who, like me, aren’t white. I know people who grew up with his early music and loved how he challenged heteronormativity and traditional gender roles. But felt deeply betrayed when he expressed admiration for fascism and Hitler so, even though he recanted, would never consider him truly iconic. Especially as he was speaking at a time when the far-right were on the rise here, and gangs of racist skinheads routinely roamed the streets.
