(Normally) A Year-Long Big Book Challenge for the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge Group - "One book. Twelve months. Infinite coffee."
Welcome to our very first Gilmore-style big book challenge! Some books on Rory’s list are so long, they stare at us from our shelves with the same energy as a disapproving Emily Gilmore. So we’re taking the pressure off — just one epic read over six months, at your own pace, with support, sass, and probably snacks.
📖 July–December 2025 Tome Pick:
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
~500 pages of sprawling family history, secrets, and epic self-discovery. Middlesex is readable, unflinching, and iconic—a Pulitzer winner that mixes Greek tragedy with Detroit grit. It's got enough tangled heritage, forbidden love, and generations of moral ambiguity to make your own family drama look tame, and Cal’s gender journey makes even classic sibling rivalries seem straightforward.
📝 How It Works:
• Read Middlesex with us between now and the end of December 2025.
• No rigid schedule — just aim to finish by year’s end.
• We’ll post monthly check-ins to share progress, quotes, questions, or feelings about Cathy (you’ll have them).
☕ Who Is This For?
• Anyone who’s avoided the Big Books on the Rory list
• Anyone who needs external motivation to get through a chunkster
• Anyone who believes all big reading projects should come with caffeine and community
💬 What to Do Now:
• Grab a copy of Middlesex in any format
• Comment below if you’re joining in!
• Drop your favorite big book reading tip, snack of choice, or coffee order
🎉 Coming Soon:
In December, we’ll open member nominations for our 2026 Oy With the Tomes Already! pick — so start plotting your revenge reads now (Monte Cristo, anyone?).
Let’s get our tome on, Gilmore style.
