Baker Street Irregulars discussion

I am sure everyone has read some great adaptions, but there is a great one coming out August 5th. It's "A Beautiful and Terrible Murder" by Claire M. Andrews. Irene Adler is the MC, and it's set while her, Sherlock and Moriarty are all enrolled in Oxford

I actually just finished that one a few weeks ago. Don't want to spoil too much but it created an interesting connection between Irene, Moriarty and Holmes. Not too much of a spoiler because it is revealed earlyh on but Irene attends Oxford in disguise (male costume is nothing new to me) because women weren't really admitted there at the time. And Holmes is a bit sexed up.

Did they at least keep her an American from New Jersey?

No, she was European but spent time in America - the author gives her a very different sort of bio. There is an offhand reference to being born in NJ, but no sense that she lived there or grew up there - her upbringing was largely European.
The mystery involves the murder of some students at Oxford. I was pretty surprised to see it categorized somewhere as YA - maybe because some of the adult thrillers I've read lately seem so juvenile in the plotting and language so its all becoming one big blur.
Overall I didn't think it was very good and there were some anachronisms that I thought an editor should have picked up.

I am about 3/4 of the way through it now. I agree about the anachronisms. I also thought it was odd that characters address Irene as Lady Irene or Lady Adler - some of it, when it's coming from Holmes or one of the other young men, it might be snark, but that's not always the case and, of course, that's not the correct address, given the bio created by the author.
I believe the book is the first in a series.
