A children's read for this month!

& I should have looked more closely at my copy! The last 60 pages are missing & it is now completely falling apart. Fortunately there is a copy at the Faded pages website.

This is my copy Swallows and Amazons (Swallows and Amazons, #1) by Arthur Ransome It has some (very simple) b/w illustrations by the author. I think the cover & back cover are from the TV programme I remember loving as a child.

I am nearly a third of the way & enjoying so far. I'm loving how imaginative & resourceful the children are!

Anne | 16 comments So glad you added the information about faded page Carol. I will get a copy from there.

Glad you can join in, Anne!

it is a fun, escapist read so far!

Jackie | 668 comments I need to finish White Nights first, but looking forward to reading it.

Cphe | 88 comments I have it and its one that I didn't read as a child.

I'm hoping it is similar to the 5 books by Blyton

I have thoughts about which authors this book reminds me of, but I'll wait until I've finished.

I love the way the children's behaviour changes from childlike to adult. It is very cleverly handled.

I've now switched to the faded page copy, so I can confirm it is in good, readable condition.

Jackie | 668 comments I just started and can already tell it's going to be good! It's hard to read the map so I looked for one online but there are so many, and what I wanted was just the one from the cover of the one I'm reading and haven't found that one.

thank you for reminding us of the faded page, I find this much easier to read than where I had been.

This is the same as the map on my edition, Jackie.

I found I didn't really refer back to it though.

Lesley | 275 comments Much to my astonishment I discovered my library has this book! Their copy is published in 2017 (hence my astonishment as they have a policy of not retaining anything older than 5 years), and the cover is from the movie made in 2016.
Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

I think I might have to investigate whether that is available on streaming, but I'm going to read the book first.
Back soon :)

Since COVID, my local library's deletion policy has been far less brisk!

The version I saw was a British b/w television series from 1963. I would have seen it in the late 60s I would think. (TV programmes used to take years to get to NZ.)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200383/... I can't find any stills from it at all. The most famous cast member was Susan George who played 'Kitty' Walker.
