Challenge Continued . . . 8. The Ilkhanate

One of Genghis Khan's grandsons, Hulegü (c. 1217–1265), ruled the Ilkhanate. He conquered Persia and much of Asia Minor. One of his successors converted to Islam in 1295, and from 1335 onwards the khanate began to dissolve. The last claimant to the title of Ilkhan was killed about twenty years later. Shared hostility towards the Mamluks (Arab caliphs known for ruling Egypt and Syria) led to several attempts to establish an alliance between the Ilkhanate and the European states that were most active during the Crusades.
✱ Read a book where religion is important to the plot (tell us why) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in THE ILKHANATE (2 words minimum).
9. The Chagatai Khanate

The Chagatai Khanate takes its name from the second son of Genghis Khan, who was the first to rule this territory, which encompassed large swathes of Central Asia, then known as Transoxiana. It remained largely unchanged from 1220 to the end of the 17th century, but Chagatai's descendants had to contend with the other Mongol khans, becoming puppet rulers of the various powers that succeeded one another in the area. They eventually were forced to abandon part of Transoxiana, which had become predominantly Turkic, and create a new state called Moghulistan.
✱ Read a book by an author who is new to you OR finish a book you thought about abandoning (tell us why you wanted to stop & whether you are glad you finished it).
10. Moghulistan

In the mid-14th century, a descendant of the Chagatai family founded the new khanate in what is now Eastern Turkestan. It was theoretically intended to be a continuation of the Chagatai Khanate, but is commonly referred to as Moghulistan, as its members were believed to be pure Mongols (Mughals). The most important khan of this dynasty was Tughlugh Timur. Elected in 1347, he succeeded in reuniting his state with Transoxiana. From the 15th century, the Mughal khans were increasingly influenced by the Turks, even converting to Islam. Their territory steadily shrank, until it was confined to the Tarim River basin by the middle of the following century.
✱ Read a book with over 1347 reviews (share number) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initial is the same letter.
11. The Timurid Empire

Timur Barlas, known in Europe as Tamerlane (1336-1405), was a Muslim of Mongol origin. This skilled leader managed to conquer a vast empire that stretched from Anatolia (present-day Turkey) to the banks of the Ganges River in India, with its capital in Samarkand. His descendants, however, soon lost the area of Persia and divided the remaining territory into various emirates. Despite this, the early period of the Timurid Empire was an important time of development in both art and local culture. Some of the most beautiful monuments from that empire can be found in today's country of Uzbekistan.
✱ Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in TIMUR (share name) OR read a book where art or local culture is important to the plot (tell us how).
12. The Golden Horde

The term "Golden Horde" only began to be used by Russian chroniclers in the 16th century to indicate the northwestern part of the ancient Mongol Empire, and has remained in the usage of historians. The first ruler of this khanate was Batu Khan (1205-1255), one of Genghis Khan's grandsons. The khanate extended from Eastern Europe to Siberia but soon came into conflict with the various princes of Rus' and the Byzantine Empire. During the 15th century, the territory was divided into various khanates, which were progressively conquered by other states, particularly the Russian Empire. Only two managed to resist the Russians for centuries: the Crimean Khanate until 1783 and the Khanate of Kazakh until 1847.
✱ Read a book set in Russia (tell us where) OR read a book with a predominantly YELLOW cover (post cover).
13.The Mughals in India

Babur (1483-1530), a descendant of both Timur and Genghis Khan, started a conquest that began in the Fergana Valley and moved through part of northern India, thus beginning the Mughal Dynasty. This dynasty would rule the Indian subcontinent until 1858, although the empire slowly began to crumble in 1707. Like the Timurid Empire, the Mughal Empire also left its mark on local art and culture. The most significant Mughal monuments can be seen in what is now Rajasthan.
✱ Read a book set in India (tell us where) OR read a book set before 1858 (tell us when).

Patrizia was inspired by her last Global Adventure to Mongolia to take a deeper dive into the Mongol Empire. Let's learn more about the Mongols and their history.
The Mongol Empire was the largest land empire in the world. At its greatest extent (1279), it stretched from Korea to parts of Poland, covering much of Asia. Even though it was short-lived (1206–1368), its influence and the importance of the Mongol populations extended for several centuries. Despite all this, it is little known to the Western world.

Tasks
1. Mongols and Tatars
The Mongol Empire actually united very different populations: the Mongols and the Tatars. Mongols refers to a large linguistic and cultural family composed of several nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia, including the Mang-hol, who forcibly united all the others and gave their name to the entire group. They were later joined by the Tatars, who were a Turkic people widely dispersed across Eurasia. They had a certain linguistic affinity with the Mongols and, like them, practiced shamanism. Even though the Tatars were militarily stronger and actually defeated the Mongols, they ended up being assimilated by the much more numerous Mongols.
✱ Read a book where the characters belong to a couple different distinct cultures (tell us what they were) OR read a book whose title includes one word starting with M and one word starting with T (you may use the word THE).
2. Genghis Khan
This renowned Mongol leader was born with the name of Temujin into the Mang-hol tribe. In 1206, after successfully uniting all the Mongol tribes and subduing the Tatar populations, he was given the divine name of Khagan, or lord of all the Mongols. This evolved into the name he is universally known as: Genghis Khan (1162-1227), meaning "universal ruler." Having established his capital at Karakorum, he continued to organize military expeditions that led to him controlling much of Central Asia, the Caucasus region, and Persia. In 1213, the Mongols advanced south of the Great Wall into China. Within 20 years they had defeated the Chinese Empire and conquered the entire country. In 1223, Khan began his invasion of the territories of the Kievan Rus' but died four years later. His successor continued this enterprise.
✱ Read a book where a famous ruler is mentioned (tell us who) OR read a book where the MC is known by a nickname (share both name and nickname).
3. The Mongol Army
Genghis Khan was certainly a military genius. His armies, composed of mounted archers, attacked in absolute silence, guided by flags of different colors, demonstrating their ability to perform very complex maneuvers. Their impressive bow skills, shooting from horseback with astonishing accuracy, were known throughout the land. The soldiers were also armed with double-edged sabers, double-pointed spears, and leather shields reinforced with metal. The Mongol military practiced the strictest meritocracy, so much so that the son of a cattle herder, Subedei, became one of Genghis Khan's most esteemed commanders.
✱ Read a book with an important character who is (or once was) a soldier (tell us who) OR read a book that includes all the letters in BOW (any order) in the title or author's name.
4. The Pax Mongolica and the Silk Road
Pax Mongolica refers to the relative safety enjoyed throughout the vast Mongol Empire. This was due to its absolutist rule, where any rebellion was brutally punished. It was also known for its development of trade. The Silk Road, which in ancient times had connected Europe with the Far East, was reopened. It had multiple routes, some even maritime, and saw a large influx of travelers in both directions until around 1360. It was used by merchants, explorers, and religious figures. These included the celebrated Italian, Marco Polo, who ventured as far as China, and the famous Moroccan traveler, Ibn Battuta.
✱ Read a book tagged TRAVEL in its GR homepage OR read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in SILK ROAD.
5. Genghis Khan's Immediate Successors
Genghis Khan's successors were elected by the assembly of the Mongol aristocracy (Kurultai). Although the line of descent was followed, several years often passed between the death of a khan and the nomination of his successor. Thus, Genghis Khan's son and heir, Ögedei, was not elected until two years after his father's death. Ögedei became responsible for the bureaucratic organization of the empire and is known for the creation of a highly efficient postal service. He continued the conquest of Europe, reaching as far as the gates of Italy, when his sudden death in 1241 stopped everything. His son Güyük became khan in 1246, after his mother's regency. He was followed by Möngke, the son of Ögedei's brother, in 1251.
✱ Read a book tagged FAMILY on its GR Homepage OR read a book with a plot line that covers a span of several years (share approx. number of years).
6. The Division of the Mongol Empire
After the death of Genghis Khan, the empire was divided into four territories. The Great Khanate, which included the Karakorum and China, was ruled by Khan's youngest son, Tolui (and his descendants). The Khanate of the Golden Horde in central-western Asia was where the descendants of his eldest son, Jochi, reigned. The Ilkhanate in the southwestern territories (Persia and the Middle East) and the Chagatai Khanate in Central Asia were entrusted to his son Chagatai Khanate. Upon Möngke's death in 1259, a civil war broke out between two of his brothers. Kublai was the victor and was proclaimed Khagan in 1264. He established the Mongol Empire into four separate khanates, which each became independent after his death in 1294.
✱ Read a series book #4 OR read a book where you can find the word DIVISION in its text (share the text).
7. Kublai Khan & the Yuan Dynasty
Kublai Khan (1215-1294) was also the creator of the Chinese empire, known as the Yuan Dynasty. It was, in fact, under his rule that the country was reunited in 1279, and Beijing was chosen as its capital. He also attempted to invade Japan and Vietnam, without success. The Yuan Dynasty was the largest empire in the world until 1368, when it was expelled from China by the founder of the Ming Dynasty. The surviving Yuan retreated to Mongolia, where they managed to reign until 1635, when they were defeated by the Qing, the last Chinese dynasty.
✱ Read a book set in China (tell us where) OR read a large book (more than 400 pages; share page count).
