Does anyone have any tips for writing banter?

What should Joanna's nickname be, Jo or Anna?

No help on the banter sorry but I think Jo for the nickname

think of banter like golfing, theres a set up, a swing, and a hit, and then the rest of the game depends on the reaction. also try and act out what you've written and make adjustments to what feels comfortable

for banter, I'd say keep the dialogue sharp and short, but don't make the actual words pointless. They need a mark to hit. Like archery, you're the wilder, the arrow is the mark, and the bullseye is the hit. the closer to center the better. Does that make sense?

Also yeah for banter use nicknames, I love when the MMC calls the FMC her last name and she calls him something like “stupid” or “idiot” or “Jerkface” in books and then the moment when they call eachother their real names is a big deal

@Jaida - Great! If you ever want an example, I got a few scenes with banter between my own characters. Even nicknames between the of them.

this is chapter 29, she calls him by his given nickname (pretty boy) mockingly later on. Most of their scenes lean more on tension than banter but hey.
