Hello, Emma,I have been practicing yoga for about 6 years now, and it has become a big part of who I am. I'm happy you started this group, and although I have to run and pick up my daughter now, I will check back soon.
I'm back. Here is my background info. I am married, 47, with three girls, ages 11, 14, 17. Always something interesting going on around here, mostly involving cell phones! Yoga has become an important part of my life these past years, and I feel it has changed my attitude as much as my body. (If only I didn't have this protective coating on my tummy, I'd have 6-pack abs!)I struggle with my weight, and am winning at the moment. I read a lot, and always bring my books to yoga class to share with the girls. My teacher runs the classes from her home, so it is cozy and intimate. I practice 3 times a week, in the mornings after school drop-off. We have the occasional man in our group, but mostly women.
I look forward to talking with other yoginis!
Welcome, Jeannette!!
I agree with you - yoga can change much more than your muscles! :)
I can't wait to see what you're reading.

Hello, all. :)I'm Jennifer, a yoga practitioner for over eight years and a 500-hour registered yoga teacher. I'm glad I found this group because I'm always looking for new insights, inspirations, quotes, or yoga books to read. I look forward to chatting with you all and comparing notes!

Oh, good, a yoga teacher! My yoga teacher is a former ballerina, who has been teaching ballet to children for years. At least one of my kids has been taking dance from her for the past 13 years. When she started an adult ballet class, I joined right in, visions of the dancing hippos in Disney's Fantasia notwithstanding..... We ladies liked the ballet, but loved the yoga she used to warm us up better, and the class evolved into serious yoga about six years ago.My book list is mostly fiction, as you can see, but I do read Yoga Journal, and have read (caution: misspelling ahead) Yogananda Parma.. ooo, can't even get close, ok, checked on Amazon: Autobiography of a Yogi: Yogananda Paramahansa. It was very interesting, if a little weird, but it's one of those books I think about often.

Does anyone practice meditation? I'd be interested in how you accomplish it in a typical busy day, and if it is as helpful as it seems it would be, and what benefits do you find there.
Welcome, Jennifer! So glad you're here! :)
Thanks, Emma! And Jeanette, I think I'll start a separate thread on meditation so we can talk back and forth about it if we want. :)
Welcome to all our new members! We've gone from 0-6 in the last couple weeks, which is not bad for a goodreads group! :)
Please feel free to contribute to the conversations and do add your books to the bookshelf!

Hi Emma,I'm Ann from the Netherlands. I've been practicing yoga for four years now and for the second year in a row I'm assisting my yoga teacher as a volunteer in a yoga class for the physically challenged.
I'm gradually building up a yoga book collection but I'm also subscribe to a dutch version of Yoga journal and I receive the Yoga journal emails as well.
You never know from a group like this you may pick up some great pointers (or poses)
Welcome, Ann! Good to have you here.
What you do as a volunteer sounds very interesting!

Hi all! I'm Melanie and I guess I am relatively new to yoga, I've been practicing it for about a year now. I haven't read too many books on the subject; though I did just purchase "Yoga as Medicine" by Timothy McCall (recommended by an instructor).
Welcome, Melanie! Let us know what you think of Yoga as Medicine.
Welcome to our new members! Please feel free to post here. :)
Hi everyone! I'm a Buddhist Yogini and a Registered Nurse! I am looking forward to discussing great books with you all! I'm currently reading "A New Earth" and it is quite fascinating!
Hi MelissaThat's interesting to read since I work in a yoga group with people who have physical limitations.
I know that surgery cannot be avoided always but if it is possible why not go for it like you did.
I guess your yoga practice was extremely helpful in your case because of the benefit of proper alignment. Way to go!!!!
Hello everyone!I have been practicing yoga (with some on / off periods) for the last 8 years. I just posted a few of my yoga favorites to the bookshelf. "Heart of Yoga" and "Yoga for Wellness" were two books that were highly recommended by my first yoga instructor, who'd been teaching for roughly 15 years already.
I like the Yoga for Wellness book in particular for it's step by step instructions, and sets of sequences depending upon what part of the body (or illness) you want to work on.
The "Meditations from the Mat" is a great reflection-a-day type book, that I've been working my way through for several years, and I always find something relevant.
I look forward to sharing with you all!
Thank you for being here, Sarah, Melissa, and Heather! :)
Sarah and Melissa: I hope you'll share your thoughts on A New Earth as you read it. I think we have a conversation about that going on here.
Heather: Thank you for adding some good reads to our shelves! I'm looking forward to checking out Meditations from the Mat sometime soon. It looks great.

I have been going to a Bikram Yoga class for a little over a year now. I haven't lost much weight, but can see my bone structure, balance, limberness, and strength increasing. The heat has been great for me, as it forces me to prepare myself by not eating as much in the hours leading up to the class and by drinking lots more water. My teachers are also former ballerinas.

Hi Emma and everyone,My name is Emily and I am a yoga teacher and currently studying yoga therapy. I live in Austin, Texas and love books about yoga. My bookshelves are overflowing with books about all different facets of yoga and yoga therapy.
Yoga is both my career and my passion. It has helped me deal with Celiac Disesase and very quickly overcome the severe symptoms I was dealing with. For that fact alone I would practice yoga daily. Because of all the other wonderful awarenesses and benefits it has brought to my life I am always seeking to learn more about yoga and to share all that I have learned with my students and anyone else interested.
I am glad to be a part of this group and look forward to chatting and sharing with each of you.
Om Shanti,
Emily
Emily, Can you write more about yoga therapy? My mom has Celiac, and I've been telling her she needs yoga. Do you have specific postures you recommend? I probably can't get her to go for Bikram's torture chamber.
Great idea, Lisa.
Emily - maybe you could start a new thread to talk about yoga therapy? I'd love to hear more.

Hi everyone,I've just found this group and it looks like just what I'm after to keep my yoga inspiration high. I have recently re-started yoga classes after a break and loving every minute. My current goal is to build some yoga practise into my daily routine but that is proving hard! I'd also love to meditate regularly. Tanya x
