this one was a very tough read - but I really did like Charlie (our MC). he was a really good dad and such a patient person.
I didn't find this thread until now, but I finished yesterday so I'll post my comments here but they'll be all at once.
I just finished it and am still thinking about it. It would make a great book club selection because there are certainly a lot of topics that could be discussed including:* Sidney's upbringing and how she was taught to try to fit in even though she was considered 'lesser.'
* The injustice of Charley's conviction
* The idea of a post-apocalyptic-type world becoming something of a utopia
* The mysticism in the book
I started this book and I have thoughts already. Like I dislike hate against difference so much. Like I am thinking if all these white folks were so prejudice, maybe they deserved to walk into the sea. Also, what happened to all the bodies 🤯.But on that thought what if you were in the middle of it. Even feeling and knowing it's wrong to be so prejudice and hateful. But what if you were the only one in the group feeling like this. Would you just go along with the group hating yourself, would you fight back even if that was dangerous. Would you try and get away from it all?
I mean it's nice to think you would never but?????

I was also thinking this would make such a great BOM. There are so many different discussions to be had, I am just 1/2 way over now and plan to finish the book tomorrow, but I can honestly say this has been the best palette cleanser on this month-long Sci-Fi reading month.
I am also listening to the audio mostly (because I work to much) but the narrator is so perfect for the setting,
I hate to say it but Charlie going to prison for false charges was actually way better than what could have happened with such charges, The only thing I can think is the brother was giving his sister a way out. Because otherwise she would be a pariah of the community. Which leads back to my thought of how would you deal with such a situation. Not being prejudice and hateful yourself and in fact maybe loving someone of color, but your whole community only sees different and treats those people with hate. Do you stand up or submit and say nothing like what happened in Charlie's case.
also why do we think prejudice exsists? I kinda feel like it's fear. People don't know how to deal with the fear they get of anyone being a bit different than them. So that fear turns to hate and then lashing out at everyone who instills this fear,
OK I finished and I was wrong Charlie did get beaten. I am sad the book ended without Charlie and his daughter joining back up but This was a great read, and I feel everyone should read. I do find it interesting they mentioned the Rapture which has been a popular topic on social media lately.
Okay this was a good book to end this crazy sci-fi nature month. I actually liked this one and gave it a 3. I was iffy at first after reading the first chapter but it really was a quick read. Charlie was my favorite character. I enjoyed reading the interactions between Charlie and Sidney. I also think this would be a great book to read maybe in a senior high school class but it also might not be allowed sadly. Just being able to break down the topics into a more in depth situation.
