Discussion thread for the second BOTM for October 2025. Please remember to use the spoiler tags when necessary! (Please see 'some html is ok' for instructions.)

Join us in reading this HR that firs the theme: Medieval. Happy reading!

For My Lady's Heart (Medieval Hearts, #1) by Laura Kinsale
For My Lady's Heart – Laura Kinsale

Synopsis:

A pawn in a court of intrigue and secrets, Melanthe finds that her only hope for rescue is from the legendary Green Knight, a man whose life she once saved. Reprint.

In medieval Europe, vows and laws are as inflexible and confining as a suit of armor. For Ruck, a noble and honest knight, those rules provide an unwavering path. Even as his wife leaves him for the Church, taking his money and his steed, Ruck’s life is one of devotion and mission.

For the beautiful widow, Princess Melanthe, those same laws and traditions conspire to consume her land and her independence. Her husband’s death has left her kingdom an inviting target for neighboring territories. Where Ruck sees a clear path, Melanthe must navigate through twisting alleyways, using shrewd deceit and devious strategy.

Can these two help each other overcome the powers conspiring against them? Will the passion in their hearts escape the constraints of their station? Is devotion enough?

With her classic romance FOR MY LADY’S HEART, author Laura Kinsale has crafted a rich, sensual portrait of life during the Middle Ages. And, now for the first time, readers can choose between two versions of the story. Both are included in this same ebook.

The first is the original published novel filled with authentic Middle English dialogue and deep period detail. The second (included only here in the ebook version) had been painstakingly reworked by the author to include a tighter read and more modern words for dialogue. Whichever you decide to read, you’ll be richly rewarded with a story of love and honor for the ages.

Jan (jan130) | 2723 comments The blurb is interesting, that there are two versions of the book. Unusual. Which version do you intend to read, Lauren?

Lauren | 1448 comments I'll probably read whichever version is free 😉😂. I'll let you know

I would probably chose whichever was shorter.....
I will likely not be joining any BOTM reads this month as medieval is not my favorite genre. I hope you all enjoy these!

Lauren | 1448 comments Donna, that's why we are friends 😂

Lauren | 1448 comments Jan, I just started with 2014 version on KU, if that helps. ;)

Susan, I'm sorry you won't be joining us this month, but I understand. Medieval hr aren't for everyone. I grew up when 80s Medieval fantasies were big. So I love it

Lauren | 1448 comments I'm only in the Prologue, and I already I hate the H's wife. Leave her crazy ass in the ditch and run!

Ha ha ha. Oh dear. You're not encouraging me to read this one, Lauren. I'll be interested to see how you find it as you read on. Keep us posted!

Lauren | 1448 comments Well, the wife, after a pilgrimage, decided to dedicate her life to Christ. She told the church the exact amount of money he had left and about the armor and horse he left at the inn. She left him with nothing. She also tried to get him to swear a chastity pledge for the rest of his life to the church. Good riddance! Now, he has to take service with the h of the story.

So far, I'm having trouble getting into this book, even with that unique prologue

Hmmm..... I'm still gonna hold off on starting this one just yet methinks....

Lauren | 1448 comments This was a dnf for me. The book wasn't bad, I just wasn't in the mood for this type of story. I plan to revisit this book another time. 🤞

Bummer. I get that about the right mood. Sometimes you're just not feelin' it for a certain type of book.

I've decided my tbr is so overloaded this one will just have to stay on the library shelf.....
