England, 1979. Vincent, Lawrence and William are the last remaining residents of a secluded New Forest home, part of the government's Sycamore Scheme. Every day, the triplets do their chores, play their games and take their medicine, under the watchful eyes of three mothers: Mother Morning, Mother Afternoon and Mother Night.
Their nightmares are recorded in The Book of Dreams. Their lessons are taken from The Book of Knowledge. And their sins are reported in The Book of Guilt.
All the boys want is to be sent to the Big House in Margate, where they imagine a life of sun, sea and fairground rides. But, as the government looks to shut down the Sycamore Homes, the triplets begin to question everything they have been told.
Gradually surrendering its dark secrets, The Book of Guilt is a profoundly unnerving exploration of belonging in a world where some lives are valued less than others.
Part 1 (view spoiler)[ So the kids were being used as human guinea pigs. That's awful. Not sure what Nancy has to do with the story. Is she one that was rehomed? Also, seems like that place that the other kids were sent so isn't the dream place. Sounds like it might have meant that they were terminated??? Oh, and is the Minister of Loneliness going to take in Vincent? (hide spoiler)]
Thru Part 2 (view spoiler)[ I'm thinking that Margate is bot a real place and any kids that are supposed to go there are killed. I'm worried that Victor is the only one of the triplets that ends up not being killed. Although William seem to be more like his killer father that the other two boys. Wondering if Nancy was supposed to be one of the victims of the boys father. (hide spoiler)]
and done. (view spoiler)[ A story about kids who were originally created by taking miscarried babies and cultivating them and then using them to experiment on. The 3rd group were created from DNA of prisoners. This lead to all kinds of problems and anyone who exhibited either bad dreams that may have references to their biological parents crime or bad behaviors were eliminated under the rouse of going to Margrave, a permanent carnival. This was a little confusing at first but once I got into it, it was scary to think this could really be possible. (hide spoiler)]
