Kafka's novella left me unentertained to say the least. It starts off with the climax, which is of course Gregor being a giant bug. While that could be entertaining to some it was not to me. The same story line could have unfolded if he had simply had a giant pimple on his forehead or went bald in the night. For example if instead he had a monsterous pimple he may not have wanted to go to work and been fired which leads to his family being dissapointed and eventually when they have the renters come they become disgusted by the pimple and move away, Gregor could become depressed that his face is disgusting to some people and stop eating and die. I guess what i am trying to say is that he Kafka did not have to be quite so dramatic. While Kafkas novella also seems somewhat unpredictable it is also very predictable. For instance what else are you going to do with your giant bug of a son than leave it locked in its room until it dies. Also, throughout the story it is implied that his family excludeing Grete were not kind to him at all and in fact taking advantage of his job. So besides Grete becoming disgusited nothing seems to change in his family life. However Gregors fight between his human over bug instincts is kind of ironic because if your a bug your are going to be a bug and there is no point except to do bug things. Him holding on humanity seems cruel because he was never allowed to live his bug life and maybe being a bug was what he needed to escape the horrors of being a traveling salesman. Anyways if i could give this stars i would proabably give it two and a half because it was very well written or tanslated either way. I think i may have enjoyed it more if he had been allowed the chance to live a bugs life or atleast the satisfaction of him living longer than his crude family.
