In mid-October, the National Book Awards announces the year’s finalists, celebrating the country’s best books and authors.
Read a book:
❇️ that is in some way a new experience for you - new to you author, new series, new genre, try an audiobook if you've never listened to one, whatever you like, just something a bit new and different. Or, if you'd rather, you can reread an old favorite!

Fun Facts about: Rhys Ford

❇️ in one of the genre Rhys writes: LGBT+ mystery, thriller, paranormal, urban fantasy
❇️ set in Hawaii or another place you consider 'paradise'
❇️ with cats in the story or with a character whose name starts with the same letter as one of Rhys' cats' name: H, B, or G

4. Adopt a Shelter Dog Month ❱❱
ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) sponsors this event to promote the adoption of dogs from local shelters. In 1981, the American Humane Association founded Adopt A Dog Month in response to the growing number of dogs and puppies entering shelters every year. Along with the need for shelters and adoptions, spaying and neutering help curb the rise in unwanted pets, too.
Read a book:
❇️ with a dog on the cover or in the story
❇️ with a title or author initials that starts with a letter in ASPCA
❇️ with SHELTER or ADOPT in the text

5. Fire Prevention Week ❱❱ Week 2 ❱❱
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” works to educate everyone about using these batteries safely. The campaign stresses how important it is to BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE safely when it comes to lithium-ion batteries.
Read a book:
❇️ with fire on the cover or has a cover with fiery colors on it
❇️ where someone recycles or is environmentally conscious
❇️ where a character needs to 'recharge their batteries' (your interpretation)

6. International Coffee Day ❱❱ October 1 ❱❱
This day celebrates one of the world’s favorite hot beverages, which is enjoyed and celebrated around the world. Call it what you like: coffee, Java, a cup of Joe, or any of dozens of names. Billions of people around the world drink billions of cups of coffee daily.
Read a book:
❇️ with coffee on the cover or a mostly brown/light brown cover (the color of coffee)
❇️ with a title or one of the author initials that starts with a J like Java or Joe
❇️ where a character drinks coffee

7. International Newspaper Carrier Day ❱❱ October 10 ❱❱
This day honors everyone who is now, or once was, a newspaper carrier. This holiday also includes anyone who hawked the paper on the street, or at a newsstand. Years ago, this job was primarily populated by kids, from pre-teen through approximately sixteen. Now, with newspaper circulation dwindling for a few decades and likely continue to do so, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, the “Carrier Day” tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars. For the record: In 1950, there were 1,772 daily newspapers in the United States. Today, there are only 1,033.
Read a book:
❇️ where someone reads the news, whether a paper or online
❇️ with between 1,772 and 1,033 ratings on GR
❇️ with a teenager in the story (aged 12-19)

8. White Cane Safety Day ❱❱ October 15 ❱❱
This day celebrates and recognizes the achievements of the blind and visually impaired, and their independence. That independence is represented by the white cane that they use to travel from place to place. This day is not about helping them across the street. Rather, it is about helping blind people to live and function independently. The white cane is an invaluable tool for the blind. It affords blind people freedom of movement they otherwise may not have. The white cane is a well-recognized symbol of independence.
Read a book:
❇️ with a mostly white cover
❇️ with a blind or otherwise physically impaired person in the story
❇️ by an author who publishes independently

9. National Make a Difference Day ❱❱ October 25 ❱❱
This is a national day began in 1992 and is devoted to helping others by doing volunteer work in the community. The activity can be almost anything. On this day, millions of Americans participate in community improvement projects such as cleanup, fix-up, painting, and repair in poorer neighborhoods, parks, and municipal facilities. It doesn’t matter what project you take on. Nor, does it matter whether you help a non-profit organization, the community, your town, a nursing home, a church, a food kitchen, or any other group in need. What matters is that you participate. Commit to helping others for just one day. Make a difference today and every day!
Read a book:
❇️ set in or published in the 1990s
❇️ with a character who is involved in volunteering or whose profession involves helping others (medical or mental health field, social work, first responders, law enforcement, education, etc.
❇️ with the word DIFFERENCE in the text

It affords blind people freedom of movement they otherwise may not have. The white cane is a well-recognized symbol of independence.
