In 1981, the American Humane Association founded Adopt A Dog Month in response to the growing number of dogs and puppies entering shelters every year. Along with the need for shelters and adoptions, spaying and neutering help curb the rise in unwanted pets, too.

7. International Newspaper Carrier Day ❱❱ October 10 ❱❱
This day honors everyone who is now, or once was, a newspaper carrier. This holiday also includes anyone who hawked the paper on the street, or at a newsstand. Years ago, this job was primarily populated by kids, from pre-teen through approximately sixteen. Now, with newspaper circulation dwindling for a few decades and likely continue to do so, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, the “Carrier Day” tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars. For the record: In 1950, there were 1,772 daily newspapers in the United States. Today, there are only 1,033.

Rather, it is about helping blind people to live and function independently. The white cane is an invaluable tool for the blind. It affords blind people freedom of movement they otherwise may not have. The white cane is a well-recognized symbol of independence.

Commit to helping others for just one day. Make a difference today and every day!
