Support decided to ignore me even after providing all the required evidence.

Scott | 11869 comments Well volunteers certainly can't help. Try again.

If they can't delete the book, it's okay to modify it: remove the image, change the title and the synopsis.🙏

Drace (dracenines) | 7945 comments Just for the record, it's been previously established by Jaclyn that bootleg copies are 100% OK to be marked as invalid. People put up bootleg Kindle copies of books with no ebook editions on a pretty frequent basis (i.e. The Sluts by Dennis Cooper, A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr., The Power Broker by Robert A. Caro before it finally received an official ebook from the publisher in September 2024), and in a thread last year where I asked about it, she said to invalidate them: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Hanan, since this book has been shelved so many times, you will probably need to start a new thread in the Superlibrarians folder, but just link the thread where Jaclyn establishes invalidation is OK for bootleg copyright-violating editions along with your request and you should be good to go.

Tami (tamicarvallo) | 7196 comments It’s not really clear how this would qualify as a bootleg copy if it was the original published edition (2014): https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

The author wrote, “I have already taken down [the book] from all platforms with the publisher’s agreement,” which suggests it was legitimately published at some point but later withdrawn. Goodreads generally doesn’t remove out-of-print editions, and the one listed here is a paperback, not an ebook (format used for books published on Wattpad and other such online platforms).

I’m also not sure what the situation is with this other listing (2015, also paperback), I'm not even sure if it's the same book as the one in the first link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

In any case, volunteer librarians can’t override Support’s decision, it sounds like they followed standard policy. If this truly involves copyright, only Support can handle it.

Drace, I don’t think this particular case matches the kind of bootleg copies you were referring to, and it doesn’t require a Superlibrarian to invalidate it either.

From what I understand, it doesn’t sound like a bootleg or pirated copy in the usual sense (like an unauthorized ebook someone uploaded). It sounds more like a rights dispute between two parties who were once connected to the same work (Hanan wrote: "The listed "author" has no rights and has abandoned the work."), the sort of case that only Goodreads Support (not librarians) can handle, because it involves copyright ownership, not metadata or edition cleanup.

It's very unfortunate that Goodreads is doing nothing. I thought they cared more about copyright, but they just decided to ignore the complaint.
