Dead Man's Hand by James J Butcher, i'm just over 50% on this!
The main character is working at a restaurant in the start, and one of the first scenes is him using magic to make to mannequins fight for a kids birthday party and then gets his glasses knocked off. which sends him into another realm thing before he gets his glasses back on. Later he fids a magic nail that reverses his powers. There is also a magical artifact that he uses one of his spells to get rid of at the end of the book
