Jayme | 4632 comments Please read through the reporting thread carefully to ensure to report correctly to get your badge/s.

After you have read your chosen book(s) for this month's group theme read, please report in the thread below.

Please state what book you read (and link it), how it fits the theme, that you discussed it (and where), and briefly summarize what you thought of the book and/or link to your review if you have written one.

If you lead the discussion, please state this in your post.

Here is an example for how to report your read:

“I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and discussed it in the [Harry Potter/Buddy Read/Other books in theme] thread. I really enjoyed the book. I watched the film first so I already knew the story line but I was surprised how much I enjoyed the book more as there was more detail involved. Plus I listened to the audio which was narrated by Stephen Fry who is a superb narrator. 4 stars.”

If you read more than one book which fits the theme, please report all your reads in the same post rather than in separate posts.

Please note, there are THREE different badges that can be obtained for group reads. Those reading and discussing one of the two chosen group reads will receive a colorful badge similar to those for previous group reads. Those reading and discussing any other book in the theme will receive a stamp. The discussion leader for the two chosen group reads will receive a badge stating they led the discussion. Maximum amount of badges you can receive for the group reads is TWO - one for the chosen group read/discussion leader and one for any other book in the theme.

In order to receive a badge you must:
1. put your Wall of Fame Name at the beginning of your post as follows: WoF Name - Sandra
2. have read the book(s) before or during October 2025.
3. discussed it in the relevant thread. Discussion must be more than "I read the book and I liked it". Discussion requires something more substantial and analytical of what you read, for example, thoughts, opinions, impact it had on you, what was your favorite part, was it what you expected it to be like etc. You may also like to review the book and post a link to the review in that thread.
4. Report that you have read AND discussed the book.

I read I Found You and am the discussion leader in the group thread. I really enjoyed this book. I did have most of the end figured out well in advance, but not the details. It was still engaging and quick to read.

I also read A Captain's Duty and discussed it the general theme thread. The story wasn't quite as engaging as I hoped. I thought the background of Richard Phillips was interesting, but I don't have any interest in maritime transport or schooling, etc., so some of the book just didn't hold my attention. Additionally, some of it was repetitive and I just didn't love it. I have yet to read a book about pirates that I find interesting.

I read Dark Water and discussed it in the generic thread for the theme. I started it Sep 28 and finished in the wee hours this morning. It's a page turner and I couldn't stop reading until I finished.

It's a mystery concerning the skeletal remains of a child discovered at the bottom of a quarry. The child, a 6 year old girl had gone missing on her way to a birthday party 26 years prior.

Erika Foster was the detective in charge of solving this case. The original investigation was botched and the detective in charge at the time took early retirement, leaving the force in disgrace. Was Erika also going to be come so emotionally involved that she loses track of her objectivity?

I read I Found You and talked about it in the group thread. I agree with Kristie that I figured out some big parts of the plot but the details were still interesting. A quick read.

I read I Found You and discussed in the group thread. A quick fast paced read that had me piecing the clues together. Worth a read.

I read What We Can Know by Ian McEwan
I discussed it in the thread.
I was in two minds about this book. On the one hand I found it to be an intriguing and original story set in a future UK. It’s about an academic in 2119 researching a poem written in 2014. The mystery was that no copy was ever found. However, the first part dwelt too much, I thought, on the researcher’s life with lots of descriptions of a country devastated by climate change.

I read I Found You and discussed it in the thread. I liked the book, it was fast and engaging and had me cling on to it. I definitely might read more books from this author.

I read I Found You and discussed it in the appropriate thread. I found the characters developed nicely. Unlike some others in the discussion group, I did not figure out who done it until the end of the book. I like that element of surprise.

I read and lead the discussion for The Compound. it was a pretty good book. The main character was not very likeable, but she was a comment on reality TV culture. I was disappointed with the ending though so I ended up giving it 3 stars.

I read and participated I the discussion for The Compound. I found it to be an interesting read although the ending left A LOT to be desired. The main character was pretty much a self centered vapid character and I did not find any redeeming features there. I though it was a decent illustration on the shallowness and fake like environments of reality shows. I gave it 31/2 stars because I was engrossed until the ending.

I finished!
J is for Judgment (Kinsey Millhone #10) by Sue Grafton by Sue Grafton

This fits the theme because there is water (ocean) on the cover of the first edition, which is the one I read.

I discussed it in the discussion thread here www.goodreads.com/topic/show/23238203...

Three stars overall for me (normal for this series.) Kinsey is hired by the insurance company she worked for after she left the police force because there has been a report of a possible siting of a man recently declared dead after being missing for five years and the company has just paid $500,000 to his widow (this is in the 1980s, so even more value than now.) The main character is overall a "good" person with a few friends, but some of the humour is her chronic lying which she does while sleuthing or to telemarketers. I don't find that as funny as I used to. She's a loyal friend and a good detective. This is a humorous, hard-boiled detective novel featuring a woman as the hard-boiled detective.

I read The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife by Anna Johnston by Anna Johnston and discussed it in the appropriate thread.
This was a really sweet story about love and second chances and how we judge people by their age. My one big take away (even though I know this, but get wrapped up in my own little life) is that everybody is a somebody and deserves to be seen and I need to take the time to do just that.

message 13: by Grainne (new)

Grainne | 1387 comments I read I Found You and joining in the discussion. I have read other books by this author before and I found the plots great. The dual time lines take some getting used to but it added to the guessing game that the reader participates in to figure out the pieces of the puzzle that Lisa Jewell feeds to us like breadcrumbs. I guessed the majority of the puzzle but one part was the most unexpected because I didn't think that character would make a reappearance.

I also read Wild Dark Shore which was surprising and a really interesting setting in the Antarctica. It was really similar to I Found You and there was some overlap. It definitely lived up to its title Wild Dark Shore and had some stormy scenes in the setting and between the characters.

Overall, I rate both 3.5.
