Thank you—that's the one!
Devil in the Details: Scenes from an Obsessive Girlhood
It was about a girl who decided to eat kosher even though her family wasn't religious. She had no religious guidance whatsoever so was pretty much making it up from what she found in the Bible.
Some specifics I remember were that she once threw a bunch of hairbands into the washer because her sister was wearing one when cooking bacon. She also would throw away several paper towels from the beginning and end of a roll because she thought they were contaminated.
I'm not sure she ever used the word "orthorexia" but it was clear from the context that she knew (at the time of writing) that she had an eating disorder and/or OCD; she realized she was beyond just eating a kosher diet.
It is not What Happened to Heather Hopkowitz?. It was a memoir, not fiction.
Thank you!
