In 2018 bestaat de opleiding geschiedenis aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam honderd jaar. Sinds 1918 wordt er werk gemaakt van de historische wetenschap, ooit in een herenhuis op de Keizersgracht, later in een villa bij het Vondelpark, en tegenwoordig in het VU-hoofdgebouw in Buitenveldert, niet ver van Schiphol en vlak bij een nieuwe, ambitieuze stadswijk: Zuidas.
Vanwege de christelijke oorsprong van de VU speelden maatschappelijke motieven van meet af aan een inspirerende rol in de beoefening van het vak geschiedenis. Nu juist diversiteit de drijvende kracht vormt, is de betrokkenheid op de samenleving nog even groot. Tegelijkertijd sluiten onderzoek en onderwijs aan bij moderne ontwikkelingen in de geesteswetenschappen.
Waar houden VU-historici zich tegenwoordig zoal mee bezig, hoe en waarom? Deze jubileumbundel geeft daarvan eenentwintig voorbeelden, waarin een mondiale benadering, een langetermijnperspectief en een veelzijdige methodologie de boventoon voeren.
