What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Begins with a younger female protagonist in a remote area who wants to explore the outside world possibly in a port town/island. One of the specific details I can remember is the clear glass like sword I think is described as a special metal in that world and being the same type that knights/paladin types use in that world. Male character and female character found the sword in a small cave or treasury pretty sure they were running from something. The other specific moment I remember was the female lead thinking about her destiny or importance as she is going through a burnt or destroyed city. It was a very thick book and I read it some time between 2005-2010
